“I know where that is, yes. Why?”

“First, did they give Connie any jewelry to wear?” I hear her asking Connie.

“Yeah, they gave her a necklace that has two little clamps attaching the V-neck of her outfit.”

“Tell her to throw it out the window!”

“But her top will open.”

“Just do it, please!”

“She heard and did it. She ripped off a fringe from her outfit and used it to tie it back.”

“Okay, good,” I say, not caring if the girl's breasts are exposed. Just glad they got rid of what I’m pretty sure is a tracking device. But they probably suspect the girls are headed in this direction.

“What now?”

“There’s a gray Chevy sedan in a parking lot on Bigo Lane off of Spring. The license plate starts with YPA. The passenger-side door is unlocked, and the keys are under the driver-side mat. Switch cars and head to my house from there. You’re going to lose the cell signal in a minute. I’ll see you here soon.”

***

The Chevy pulls up to the front of my house. I direct Mari where to drive and park behind my shed. The two women get out of the car. Mari is wearing shorts and a T-shirt, while Connie is wearing a short, brown mini-dress American Indian costume that barely reaches down to her upper thighs. It has the fringes hanging down that Mari spoke of. The top part is an extremely low-cut top revealing most of her ample bosom, even with the string of fabric holding the V-neck together.

“Pleasantries and introductions come later. Help me with this first.” I head to the tarp behind the car and grab a corner. I point to the other side for one of the girls to grab the other corner. Connie gets there, and we pull it over the car. The tarp has brush attached to it for camouflage. It’s a military ghillie wrap for vehicles.

“This is Connie,” Mari says. There’s a strong odor of perfume in the air.

“Hello, Mari. Connie,” I try not to stare at Connie’s getup. It’s one thatactualNative Americans would likely find offensive. She also has a ridiculous amount of makeup mixed with dried blood smeared across her face.

“Excuse my appearance. This outfit wasn’t my idea. Anyway, it’s nice to meet you. Blondie, is it?” Connie asks.

“Call me Josef. Hold on. I’m getting a call. It could be important,” Looking at my cell, I see it’s Katana. “Hello, Kato, my friend.”

Kato is talking as Mari looks at me, and I notice Connie is looking down the road in both directions, then towards the woods like she’s calculating what she should do next. She may have some experience in this kind of thing.

“Thank you, Kat,” I say and end the call confirming Sagawa’s people know they were heading in this direction. “My friend says Sonomi is sending people here to ask me if I know where Connie might be heading.”

I don’t let Mari know they made her and will most likely go to her father’s house after they stop here. I need to come up with a plan.

“Thank you both. I’ll get to a road and hitch my way back to the reservation,” Connie reaches down while bending and lifting her legs across her thighs in front of her, one at a time, snapping the heels off her stilettos. She starts walking toward the trailhead in the woods.

“Wait!” Mari shouts. “Connie, you can’t hitchhike looking like that.”

“They're going to ask me some questions and have a look around. They won’t find you,” I try to assure them.

“How do you know they won’t find us?” Connie asks, turning and heading back towards us.”

“I think he has experience with these kinds of people,” Mari says with a slight smirk.

“Okay. Listen to me now,” I start to talk to them like they’re Bratki soldiers I command. “I can’t take you into my house. They’ll smell you and get suspicious.”

“Sorry,” Connie interrupts. “They sprayed me with it when they made me put this ridiculous outfit on.”

“It’s fine.” I think about sending them to the woods, but Sonomi could have people check around there, and Connie may try to head out to the road. Dressed like that, I don’t think it would be a good idea for the attractive woman to go out into the woods. I consider telling the girls to wait in the car, but it's over ninety degrees today. I don't want Mari to see what's in my shed, but I have to act quickly. There's no other course of action to take right now.

"Follow me," I say before leading them to the shed. I open the door, let them in first, and follow close behind.

“What the…?” Mari says.
