Next to Amelia’s image was a countdown and then a figure underneath. Drake sucked in his breath at the number. Drake’s mind made an immediate connection. His gaze snapped back to the ticking clock.

“Got less than an hour. Can you track her?” Drake roared.

“Drake, I’m trying, but this bastard is bouncing all over the place. I’m getting there, but slowly,” Nigel said, not raising his eyes.

“And I’m bidding on Amelia, but there are some determined fuckers out there. There’s one that bids every time I get top,” Leila said. “I’m countering each bid, but…” Leila broke off and leaned close to the screen. The breath hissed from her mouth.

“Back off now. The child belongs to Rage MC. She comes with a promise of a painful death,”Leila read a message out loud that popped up.

“What the fuck?” Hawthorne asked, pushing closer.

“What do I do, boss?”

“Answer him.”

“Well aware she’s Rage. Suggest you take a running jump. No one’s getting her apart from me,”Leila spoke as she typed back. A series of dots flickered, and then another message arrived.

“The infamous LG or NM. Keep bidding. One of us should win. JW,”Leila read out loud.

“JW? James Washington? What’s Washington’s stake in this?” Ramirez asked, spinning to Drake.

Drake shrugged.

“Rage doesn’t have dealings with Washington.”

“So why the fuck is he throwing his hat in the ring? Leverage?” Ramirez asked, puzzled.

“Nah, not Washington’s style,” Drake replied. He had an inkling why James Washington was involved, but he couldn’t discuss it.

“Getting close,” Nigel piped up, and the air snapped as Drake’s temper flared again.

“Find. Amelia. Now,” Drake yelled as he saw Amelia cringe and realised it was a live feed. Fuckers were watching their little girl live! Ace locked his arms around Drake.

“Hold it in, Drake!” Ramirez said, slamming a hand into Drake’s chest. “What’s the plan? If Washington’s involved, his men are also working on this. Drake, I’d rather get to Amelia before he does.”

“We need to take sectors, so as soon as we have a location, we have to have somebody near the coordinates when they come in. One of Rage and one of ours. Get our asses out there. We can have someone to Amelia within ten minutes,” Davies suggested. Davies shifted the screen, and a large map of Rapid City appeared in quadrants.

“No need, I’ve a lock. They’re at this address,” Nigel cried, springing to his feet. “Let’s go.”

“You can’t go,” Ramirez denied.

“Officer, I’m licenced and armed. If you think I’m sitting here when that little girl is about to become a paedophile’s plaything, you got another thing coming, matey.” Nigel pushed past Ramirez. Footsteps thundered behind Nigel, Ramirez was calling it in, but they were closest to the address.

“What is Diego going to do, Jett? Where’s Amelia?”

“Don’t know, baby,” Jett replied sorrowfully. That tone alarmed me more than being tied up.

“You do!” I screamed.

“Think they gonna sell Amelia, and as for us, I don’t need to tell ya, babe.” Jett sighed. “Sorry I dragged you into this. Never meant for this to happen.”

“Fuck that, fuck Dina, fuck all of this! I love you, and that whacked-out bitch does not understand what that means,” I yelled at Jett. Jett needed to get angry. Angry Jett made things happen.

“How sweet,” Diego said from the shadows. Diego switched the lights back on, and I blinked furiously against them. I was still sitting in the position he’d left me. Diego put a laptop down and dragged me to the wall near Jett.

“Bastard,” I spat.
