“Now that’s how you kiss a woman,” I muttered, and Klutz chuckled.

“Is there something you want to tell me?” Klutz asked, still holding me close.

“Huh?”

“Ten million dollars?”

“It’s not important,” I replied, and Klutz and Calamity laughed together.

“No, it’s clearly not,” Calamity agreed. “Now you know she’s not with you for your money!”

I scowled at Calamity, who grinned cheekily and waved us goodbye.

“I’ve had no one come to my defence like that before. It was so damn hot,” Klutz said.

“He annoyed me,” I retorted.

“He annoys fucking everyone!”

Klutz

Walking in on that conversation twisted my head. I was stunned when I realised my father had the sheer audacity to call Aurora. Even worse, I’d no idea how he’d got her phone number. Fury had welled deep inside me. If we’d been face to face, I’d have been arrested for assault and battery. How fucking dare he think he can waltz into my life after the shit he’d pulled? Oh, I’d got some positive publicity, and I was meant to come running back? Over my damn dead body.

Then I’d heard Aurora attacking, and something punched me in the stomach. Never had anyone defended me so vigorously. Aurora was a mama bear protecting her cub, and she let Jermaine know that. I’d almost laughed at this petite woman taking on Jermaine. I bet no one had ever spoken to him with such disdain. Calamity had rested a calming hand on my shoulder as I listened in, and my pride in Aurora grew with every second as she attacked with no holds barred. She was kicking ass and holding no survivors.

There was a pang in my heart as she railed at Jermaine. And I knew then that no matter what happened in our future, I would break my back making sure she lived a happy life. Aurora Victoria was a warrioress, and I’d always be by her side. Come what may.

“Those fuckers!” I exclaimed as Aurora fell into helpless laughter beside me.

It was Saturday, and we’d arrived at the cookout at the Jackson ranch. The house was lit up, and the space in front was laden with tables, chairs, and grills. Many of her neighbours were mingling with the exiles, and amusement was rife amongst the crowd.

I was cursing at the fact that some idiot had moved bales of hay for me to walk between and not get hurt. Blaze was howling and snapping photos of my face. I’d get that fucker later. Calamity and Fanatic were standing on the porch with beers in hand, tipping them in salute to me as I scowled darkly and warned retribution.

“I’ll get even,” I threatened as Aurora and I walked up the drive between the bales. Then, without warning, it happened. As usual, I tripped over thin air and barrelled into a haystack, knocking it out of sync with the others. A stunned hush fell over the crowd as they stared at me in disbelief as I righted myself. Calamity, followed by Fanatic, let out a howl of laughter, and soon everyone joined in.

“Only you, brother,” Gauntlet grumbled as he handed me a plastic cup of beer.

I stared in astonishment at my hand.

“Don’t want you to get hurt and cut yourself on glass,” Savage commented, and I glared before tipping the drink over Gauntlet’s head.

Fuck him.

Gauntlet screeched, and we all laughed harder at the noise. I’d never heard him make such a sound. Now I’d got my own back.

“Anyone record that?” I yelled.

“Yeah, I got it!” Old Lady Hudson hollered.

“Send to me,” I called, and she winked as she taped on her phone.

Skip walked past and sent me a disgusted stare.

“Waste of an excellent beer, fool,” he told me as I reached out to get one from the ice bucket and promptly knocked it over.

“Hey, we brought you a present,” Jett teased.
