“That was abrupt.” Aimee giggled somewhat hysterically.

Bemused, I gazed around, cupping my eyes against the bright sun, trying to get my bearings. My eyes narrowed on something in the distance.

“Hell! I know where we are. We go up. To that!” I said and pointed at a building, a tiny dot on the horizon.

“Is it inhabited?” Aimee asked, squinting.

“Yes, and by a friend!” I linked arms with Aimee.

By now, I wasn’t sure who was holding who up, and we set a slow pace towards sanctuary.

???

The moon was high and beaming down upon us in its silvery glow when we finally reached the far-distant building. Something that had taken us three times longer than it should have. But we were too tired and too weak to move faster. Ready to collapse, I slammed through the double doors and dragged Aimee in. A blonde behind the counter stared and blinked in disbelief.

“Magic!” Alice screeched, running around the bar.

“Alice! What have I told you… Holy fuck! Aurora Victoria!” Magic bellowed, appearing and lumbering towards us. Strong arms caught Aimee and me, even as she struggled to move backwards. Magic lifted us off our feet with a heave and carried us to a table.

“Call Klutz and then the presidents. Ensure Ramirez, Nando, Hawthorne, Artemis, and Delta Force all know. Phone Bunny after Klutz to help make calls. Get a notification to the old ladies. Phone Doc Gibbons and Paul and tell them we have wounded women. Alice, what are you waiting for?” Magic’s hands were carefully checking me over, and then Aimee when I offered a reassuring nod. Satisfied we’d no broken bones, Magic sat back on his haunches, trying to make himself small.

“Magic, shut up. I’m already dialling people,” Alice snapped from behind the bar, where she jogged back out and dumped water bottles in front of Aimee and me. We both snatched at them, and Magic’s boom made us jump.

“Slowly, girls. Food! You need food!” Magic bounded away, and Aimee sent me a horrified look.

“Magic is larger than life. Don’t fear him; nobody innocent has any reason to be frightened of him. Magic’s a legend within the MC world. A nomad biker who rules this part of the Black Hills with an iron fist. Magic’s known to be fair, and his bar is where many differences and arguments are hashed out. He doesn’t take bullshit and refuses to allow bloodshed here. And Magic would cut his own throat rather than harm us,” I explained.

Aimee’s eyes were growing bigger and bigger.

“What world do you live in?” Aimee whispered.

“A world where I understand a decent man will kill to protect his family. Where love, loyalty, and honour are not mere words spoken. They are morals lived by these people, although sometimes the assholes forget it,” I said, my mind flicking to Rage. “But for all their bushy beards, vulgar language, and over-the-top personalities, they are good men and women. And each of them would lay their life down for an innocent person. If you want to judge them, that’s up to you, but for now, remember they are coming to defend you.”

As I spoke, we heard a shotgun arm, and Aimee craned her head. Amused, I twisted mine and saw Alice with a gun aimed at the door.

“Alice, we killed the fucker who took us,” I said to the tiny blonde.

“Don’t give a fuck. Whoever comes through there better be friendly, or I’m nailing his ass to the wall!” Alice retorted.

Magic snickered as he walked out and dumped a kiss on his barmaid’s head. Alice preened a little but kept the shotgun shouldered.

“My baby girl is coming along just fine,” Magic said, dropping two plates in front of Aimee and me. He’d made thickly cut sandwiches crammed with ham and salad. I snatched the first and took a huge bite. Magic rubbed my back, murmuring as I devoured it and grabbed the second. Aimee was no slower than me. Within minutes, we both were ready to lick crumbs, and Magic eyed us, surprised.

“I’ll make more,” he muttered and strode away.

“I’d love a coffee,” Aimee whispered.

Alice overheard and shouted to Magic to make me a hot chocolate and Aimee a coffee.

“Do you two need anything?” Alice called across from where she still manned the bar with the shotgun.

“Time,” Aimee replied without thinking. Alice sent Aimee a measuring look that spoke volumes of understanding.

“That, I could understand. But is there anything you require, Aimee, Aurora Victoria?” Alice inquired.

“I’m fine, thanks,” Aimee answered as Magic brought out a plate with sandwiches and chips on it and a mug of coffee. He placed it in front of Aimee, and I smiled as her hands twitched towards it, but manners stopped her.

“Eat!” I ordered, and Aimee needed no further prodding.
