“It’s okay to be nervous,” he replied. “Just don’t let it take over. Don’t get inside your own head too much, and it’s going to be fine.”

“Thank you,” I said as I gave him a warm smile. “That means a lot, really.”

He gave me one of his charming smirks in return, and I did my best to cheer up.

I didn’t have to stress about the future. I had today. I was good at living for today, right? I didn’t have to fixate.

I had to stay positive and hope for the best.

And maybe I would get my fairytale ending after all.

TWENTY-THREE

Greyson

I wokeup with the normal excitement I felt whenever I would be flying that day.

Normally, I would go out for a spin if I had nothing else planned for the day, but there was something exciting about knowing I would be flying with a client. I enjoyed the process of dealing with the operators at airstrips, and I enjoyed the responsibility of the flight when there was someone else on the plane, too.

And knowing it was Laurel I would be flying was an extra dose of excitement in my veins.

It had been a blast when she had taken control of the plane the other day, and part of me hoped she would want to do it again. It wouldn’t be something I would ask of her, and if she had other things to do I would respect that, but the thought of being able to guide her to do one of the most amazing things in the world (in my mind) was nothing short of amazing.

And that was really the core of what was making me fall in love with this woman.

She was fearless.

She could be open about her insecurities and her anxieties, but when it came down to it, she was really brave enough to do the things she had been scared to do before. I knew she was scared of how she would handle the hotel when we got to Seattle, but I also knew she was brave enough to dive in and do it.

And that was what really made me want to be with her.

She had the same kind of drive coupled with the same kind of bravery that drove me to do the things I did in life. And that was a massive turn on in my world. I loved a woman who knew how to get out there and take life by the horns, and she had done that.

Even though I felt bad the other day for making her late, that didn’t change the fact that she bounced back strong. She hadn’t let the moment of being late ruin it for her, and she dove right back in where she had been, taking control over the situation and fixing it.

So today, I would make sure we got up in the air soon enough to make it to Seattle with plenty of time to relax when we got there. It was Sunday, so I knew the airstrip wasn’t going to be as busy as it was during the week, and that meant for an easy flight for us all around.

I headed straight out to the airstrip so I could check up on the plane. I hadn’t flown it since we’d gotten to California, but I was sure it would be ready to go pretty easily. It might need a little maintenance here or there, but I was okay with that. It still gave me plenty of time to be able to take care of things before Laurel would get out there.

I’d already told her I was going to be out to the hangar early to be able to look over the plane, and she told me she would meet up with me when she was ready.

“I’ll even bring lunch to have before we get into the air,” she’d said.

“That would be great. Bring sandwiches,” I told her. “I love the subs they’ve got in that store that’s right around the corner from the hotel.”

“Deal.”

So I was looking forward to that, but first came the work of the morning. I had to get through checking the fluids on the plane and making sure the steering was where it should be. There had to be plenty of fuel for us to go on, and most importantly, I had to check on the propellers for both wings. I had noticed the same propeller that was giving me fits before seemed to be acting up again when we were on our way to California from Florida, but it hadn’t been anything to really worry about.

I hadn’t wanted to bring it up when we were still in the air out of respect for Laurel. I knew it wasn’t anything to get worried about, but I also knew how nervous she could get about flying. I didn’t want to say something that would give her anxiety over how things were going for us in the air, especially since she was the one who had handled the plane for a good portion of the flight.

The last thing I wanted was for her to think she had done anything wrong with the plane. Because I knew for a fact she hadn’t. It was all a matter of the plane needing a good tune up and not having the time to get it done. I would, with time and money, be able to do the work that had to be done on the thing, but I hadn’t gotten around to that yet.

In the meantime, I had been limping along with what I had to work with, but that hadn’t been much. It really was coming down to just making the proper appointment and giving Kenton enough time to really give the plane a good once over.

I was the only one out at the hangar, and I was eager to get the bird up and in the air. But, it didn’t take long for me to realize there was something wrong. I’d hoped that the propeller was just acting up because of the length of the flight.

After all, Kenton had taken a look at the plane just before I had left for Florida. It really shouldn’t be a problem so quickly. But, I barely had the propeller up to full speed before it was rattling something fierce.
