“Hello?” Naomi asked.

“Life sucks,” I said.

“Uh-oh-” she replied. “What’s going on?”

I filled her in on what happened with Leroy, and what he said to me about my promotion that day. I included how he had pointed out that I had been delayed because of the plane, too, and how that wasn’t my fault.

“I don’t want to make excuses, because I know I’m late sometimes, but the fact that he said the plane thing was part of his reasoning was enough to make me want to scream. I mean, I have no idea what to tell him. Like, it wasn’t my fault that the plane needed a part. But you know how he is. He’s going to think I’m trying to justify what was going on with oversleeping because I tell him that the plane isn’t my fault.”

“You know,” she said, “If he’s that worried about deadlines, you might want to find someone else to work for. I don’t want to get you to hate your boss, but everyone is late to work sometimes, and it seems like he’s being extra hard on you for this.”

“Right?” I exclaimed. “I mean, it’s been a couple months that I’ve been doing this, and I’ve only been late to work twice because of something I had done. That doesn’t seem that bad to me.”

“It’s really not. And he should have the grace to know that things happen. I don’t know what you want to do, but if I were you, I would be talking to him about how you aren’t going to stick around if he’s going to be that micromanaging of your schedule.”

I sighed. I knew she was right, and I really should have the talk with my boss. If I didn’t say something, it was only going to get worse. I knew that, and I didn’t want to risk that happening. On the other hand, I wanted to get this promotion. If I did that, I would have a lot more freedom.

While I was on the phone, I got the notification that another call was trying to come in.

“Can I put you on hold for a sec?” I asked. “I’m getting another call.”

“Sure.”

I flipped over to Greyson and put the phone back to my ear.

“Hello?” I said.

“Hey, how are you doing?” Greyson asked.

“I’m good, busy,” I said. “I was just on the phone with one of my friends from back home, but she could wait while I answered you.”

“Oh, I won’t keep you very long then,” he said. “I just wanted to tell you we need to talk.”

“Okay,” I said. “Right now?”

“No, whenever you’re free. It’s not an emergency,” he said.

“I’ll text you when I’m on my way back to the hotel,” I promised.

I hung up the phone and went back to Naomi.

“That was Greyson,” I told her. “He says that we need to talk.”

“In a good way or a bad way?” Naomi asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe he’s going to finally say that we have to put a label on this if we’re going to keep it up. I mean, that’s what I want to do, but I haven’t felt like I’m the one who should bring it up to him.”

“I hope that’s what he’s going for,” she said. “Let me know, will you?”

“You know I will,” I said. “I’m having the kind of day that I’m going to call you and let you know every time I sneeze.”

She laughed. “Keep your head up, girl. It’s going to be okay. Don’t stress about your job. You know what you’re capable of, and if this guy’s not going to see it, then you can find another job. No big deal.”

“Right,” I said with a sigh.

And I knew she had a point. I could always find a new job where I wasn’t so bound by the clock, and for the sake of my sanity, that might be the way to go. But, I also knew I had to get through the next project before I would be able to do that.

There were still a few things that had to be done here at the hotel before I could move on, and I wanted to make sure I left the client here happy with what I had done.
