I might have been late to work that day, but I was working hard to make sure he was happy with the final outcome of the project, and so far, I felt things were coming together nicely. It was just a matter of sticking with it until it came through, and I could put this behind me.

Difficult clients were always going to be part of the industry, and if I managed to move up the ladder or move to another company, I could get away from having a difficult boss. It was just a matter of time before I could.

I just hoped that the talk with Greyson went well later that night.

What else could be added to the list of things on my mind?

I wasn’t sure how much more I could take.

THIRTY-THREE

Greyson

My heart wasin my throat as I walked to Laurel’s room.

She let me in right after I knocked, and I smiled despite the fact my heart was breaking on the inside.

“How was your day?” Laurel asked.

“It was long. How was yours?”

“Pretty good. Once I managed to get to work and get going, I was able to get a lot done,” she said.

“Did you get in trouble for being late?”

The question hung in the air, and Laurel looked at me like a whipped puppy who had just gotten caught stealing cookies off the counter.

“My boss called. I don’t know why these managers are so quick to call him when I’m running late in the morning. I know what the deadlines are, and I wish they would trust me to be able to take care of it without including Leroy,” she said.

“I knew it was a bad idea to be staying here last night!” I said. I was angry hearing that she had gotten in trouble again for being late, and though I wasn’t going to blame myself for it entirely, I knew that I was a large part of the problem.

“No, don’t be upset,” Laurel said. “I know you didn’t want me to be late, but it was my fault for not hitting the snooze button on my alarm clock. I thought that I was just resetting it for five minutes, but I accidently turned it off instead. I’m the idiot who fucked up there.”

“We need to stop seeing each other,” I said.

“What?”

She looked at me with wide eyes, an expression of horror on her face. “What did you say?”

“I said we have to stop seeing each other,” I repeated. “I know you are having fun with this, but I also know that I’m keeping you from focusing on your work.”

“No, it’s not you. It’s just that I’ve had a lot going on, and I guess I didn’t do the right thing with balancing work and my other wants. I don’t know. I’ve been so wrapped up in work for so much of my life, I didn’t know how to handle it when I had other things happening. I guess it was so exciting for me to actually be dating someone that I forgot how important it is for me to be working like I was,” she said.

I shook my head. She said she had been wrapped up with other things, and besides me, the only thing I could think was that she could be pregnant. I wished if she was she would just tell me, but on the other hand, if she wasn’t, she would feel like I had been snooping through her things when I found the test. I didn’t want to make her think I was spying on her, but I had to know.

I decided the best thing to do was to ask her without coming right out and saying it.

“Other things?” I asked. “Do you have something you want to tell me?”

Her eyes widened again, and I did my best to read her face. I knew I was coming off as lecturing her, and I didn’t mean to, but at the same time, I had to know the truth. I didn’t see how I could be any clearer with what I was saying without asking point blank, but I also felt I was giving her a chance here.

“No,” she replied at last. “I told you, I have always put work first, and I guess when you and I started seeing each other, I just got too excited with us that I didn’t prioritize work properly.”

“I sent for another pilot,” I stated.

The words hung in the air, and she continued to stare at me like she wasn’t able to even comprehend what I was telling her. But, I stood firm. I had already sent for the other pilot, and if I had come to find out she was pregnant, then I would have figured out our next steps from there. Since she didn’t say anything about that, however, I wasn’t going to push the matter further.

“Why?” she asked. “I thought you were flying me home.”
