“Yes, that would be much better than having to deal with the backorder. Do that,” he said.

“Already on it,” I replied with a smile.

The smile was forced, but I had learned how to make a convincing smile despite it being forced, and he seemed to buy it. He headed back toward his office, and at the same time, my phone started ringing. I glanced down, unsure of who would be calling me at this time, but my heart skipped a beat when I saw Rory’s name on the screen.

It was the first time in a long time I had talked to Rory, and I was glad to hear from her. I wanted to hear how things were going with her billionaire husband, Caden, and what she was doing with her bakery these days.

“Hey, girl!” I said. “It’s been forever and a day. How are you?”

“Busy,” she said. “Busier than ever with the bakery and everything. It’s not so bad with the help I’ve hired, but still, I want to be hands on with the shop, and you know how I get when I’m trying to make things just so.”

“In other words, you spend most of your time there.” I laughed.

She joined in, then asked what I was up to.

“I’m in Seattle,” I said.

“Naomi mentioned you were traveling for work,” she replied. “Said you were seeing someone, too.”

“Oh, Naomi,” I said with a sigh. I didn’t know if she’d told Rory about how I had broken the pact and Naomi had brought up the fact I could be pregnant, but if she had, Rory wasn’t going to be the one to fill me in on that. We both knew Naomi tended to have a bit of a big mouth, but I always attributed that to the fact she was a waitress.

She liked to talk, and she liked to have things to talk about. Of course, my breaking the pact would be something that would come up in the course of conversation, but I wasn’t sure just how much she would spread. She wasn’t exactly the kind of girl who would spread rumors, but I also knew her well enough to take what she said with a grain of salt.

I hoped Rory felt the same, but I wasn’t going to get into that with her now.

“I was seeing someone,” I said. “But that came to an end.”

“What!” she asked. “What happened? Tell me the deets.”

I quickly explained to her how I had been given this job to design the interior of the new chain of hotels, and how my boss had specifically chosen me instead of taking care of the project himself.

“He even went so far as to hire me a private pilot to make sure I was able to hop from one place to another without having to wait,” I said. “And it turns out, the pilot was one of the hottest men in the world. Charming and funny, too.”

“Am I hearing you tell me you joined the mile high club?” Rory asked.

“I did,” I said. I blushed as I admitted it to her, and I was glad I was the only one still in the lobby of the hotel. “I mean, we weren’t exactly in the air, but we were on his plane.”

“It counts,” Rory said.

“I knew you’d say that,” I replied, letting the smile show in my voice. “Which is why I’m okay with saying it, too.”

“So what happened?” she asked.

I sighed.

“Do you want the long version or the short?”

“Just tell me what happened,” Rory said. “No judgments here, judgment free zone.”

“How much did Naomi tell you?” I asked. I wasn’t sure how much I wanted to include with what I told her, and that included the pregnancy test. But, if Naomi already filled her in, then I felt that I should also tell her what had happened in the full version.

“Just that you were seeing someone,” Rory replied. “Does she even have the full version?”

“I don’t think she knows that we broke up yet,” I said. “I haven’t talked to anyone.”

“I won’t say anything,” Rory promised. “But it might help you to get it off your chest. I mean, that’s assuming that you are fucked up with what happened.”

“Oh, I’m hurting,” I replied. “Like I can’t talk about it too much or I’m going to start crying again. I’ve cried myself to sleep the past two nights, too.”
