“I’m sorry, baby girl,” Rory said. “I know how much that hurts. What went wrong?”

“He just said that he doesn’t feel like I’m able to concentrate on work with us being together. He got another pilot to fly in, and that’s the one who’s going to help me finish up with this project, but then he left. I tried to convince him that it wasn’t him, and I would be able to handle this better, but he wouldn’t listen to me. He just kept saying that he was too much of a distraction, and he didn’t want to stay because he was going to wind up costing me my promotion.”

“Oh jeez, are you serious?” Rory asked. “Men can be so stupid sometimes, I swear.”

“I know,” I said. “But like, what really hurts is the fact that he wasn’t even letting me have the chance to convince him that I really would prioritize work. I know I’ve been late a couple of times, but with the way everyone has been acting about it, you would think that it was the end of the world. It’s not like I’ve missed a deadline or anything like that, either. It’s just that he didn’t want me to get reamed by my boss again.”

“Because Leroy is so easy to work for,” Rory replied. I heard the eyeroll in her tone.

“Exactly,” I said with a sigh. “It’s not like he and I were best buddies and now he’s pissed off at me. It’s just that he was pissed off that I was late a couple of times. And when he asked me if I got in trouble for being late again, I felt that I had to be honest with him. I don’t like lying, you know?”

“It wasn’t right for him to break up with you,” Rory told me. “He should have at least given you the chance to prove to him that you were able to make the deadlines and he wasn’t a problem. I mean, it’s not like he was your parent or your babysitter and he had to take away the shiny toy you wanted to play with, you know?”

“That’s what I’m saying!” I agreed. “I knew talking to you would make things better. I mean, this still sucks ass and hurts like a bitch, but hearing you agree that I’m not the crazy one really does help with how I’m processing the whole thing.”

“You aren’t crazy,” Rory confirmed. “But how are you dealing? I don’t want you to ignore the whole thing to the point that you don’t process the breakup and have it come back to bite you in the future.”

“I’m working on it,” I admitted. “I don’t know how to really wrap my mind around the fact that we are done, but I guess it isn’t a complete shocker. I didn’t know how or if we were going to continue seeing each other when I got back anyway, so I guess the fact that he broke up with me before I got back means I can be well on my way to being over it by the time I do get there.”

“That’s a positive way to look at things,” Rory agreed. “I just don’t want you to hate all men because of how stupid this one decided to be.”

“I don’t,” I told her. “But I do see now that I’ve been smart in focusing on my career rather than finding a guy to make me happy in life. My career isn’t going to wake up one day and tell me that it’s too much of a distraction for me to handle, then pull out of my life.”

“Exactly,” Rory agreed. “Hang in there, girly, I know that this sucks for now, but trust me, the pain does fade. You’re going to be alright. And now when you get home, you’re bound to get that promotion and forget all about this asshole who left you for a stupid reason.”

“I hope so,” I said. “I still don’t know if the promotion is withdrawn from the equation. But I do want to get home and get this entire thing put behind me. At the very least, when I get back I don’t have to keep thinking about this.”

“And we’ll go out and have some fun,” Rory said. “We’ll call a girl’s night out and just leave the guys at home or in the gutter where they belong.”

I grinned. Rory knew just what to say to make me feel better about everything, and I was glad for the chance to talk to her. I almost didn’t answer the phone, but now I saw that it was smart that I had.

“Well,” I said, “I better get back to work before you decide you’re too much of a distraction and leave me, too.”

Rory laughed. “I’m not worried about that. I know I’m way more important than any room.”

“Exactly,” I said.

We wrapped up the conversation, and I turned my attention back to the lobby and how to get the furniture for the space. I was glad that we were going to go with my original idea, and while I was still hurting over what had happened with Greyson, that didn’t change the fact that Rory did make me feel better with her fresh perspective on the situation.

But, even with that perspective, I worried it was going to hurt for a lot longer even still. I had really fallen for Greyson, and I hated that he was no longer in my life. I had dreams of being with him forever, and he was just gone, as though he was never there in the first place.

Still, I knew hearts healed. Like everything else, this would take some time, but it would be alright in the end.

I still had my career, and like I told Rory, it wasn’t going to ever walk away from me. I was the one in control over that, and I could decide when and where I went with it. I didn’t need a man in my life to make me happy, I just had to have my career.

But damn, did this breakup ever hurt.

THIRTY-FIVE

ONE WEEK LATER

Greyson

I sworeand tossed the hammer aside, ignoring it as it hit the concrete floor and bounced somewhere else. I didn’t care if it broke something or what happened to it. All I knew was that I was pissed, and the hammer was the closest thing I had to take out my anger.

“You trying to be Thor?” a familiar voice asked.

I turned to see Kenton walking into the hangar. “Don’t you have to give it some command now to have it come flying back to you?”
