“There she is, the boss lady,” Greyson said as he appeared. He was freshly showered and dressed in his nicer jeans and t-shirt.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I wanted to take the boss to dinner tonight,” he told me.

“I love it when you call me that,” I said with a grin.

Not only had I gotten the one promotion after I got back from Las Vegas, but I had also gotten another promotion three months later. Leroy was moving up the ladder himself, and he had left his job as the company manager. I was the one who had been given his job when he left, and though I was shocked that I was the first choice, I hadn’t hesitated at all to take the position.

I had done a lot scarier things in my life, and I was proud to be able to say I really was the boss of the company.

Of course, I had made some changes along the way, but I had also done some good things for the company, too. Most of all, I made sure that no one felt that they were going to get fired if they were late for work every now and then. There were more incentives given to get them to work on time, but I wasn’t going to do things the same way Leroy had.

I wasn’t a micro manager, and my crew seemed to be better off for it.

Our numbers were higher than ever, and we had more work to do than what we could take on. I was going to have to hire more people to come into the company just to fill the jobs that we had lined up without making clients wait for months before we would be ready to take on their projects.

All in all, life had been going better than I could have ever dreamed.

Greyson had met with most of my other girlfriends, and they had all liked him. I knew they were a little skeptical at first, but they came around once they got to know him, and once they were sure that I was happy with being with him.

We had moved in with each other in a new apartment, and I had to admit, I was happier than I had ever been. I did all the design for the inside of the place, and I hadn’t let Greyson pick a single thing. But, he had gone with me to point out all the ugly couches he could find, which I was okay with. I was happy to hear what he thought was a good idea, just so I could show him what was a better idea than what he was saying.

We had fun.

Shit, our lives together was fun.

I had no idea when we fell in love that I could have so much fun with the man I was with. I always thought of being in a couple meant that there was a lot of sex, but that you also had a lot of responsibility, too. I had heard time and time again that it was hard, and I wasn’t at all sure of what to expect.

What I didn’t know was that there was a lot of fun to be had, too.

We had a blast teasing each other, going out with each other, and enjoying life with each other. I realized for the first time in my life that this is what it meant to be best friends with the person you were dating, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I knew that he had his faults, but I accepted those about him, just like he had embraced me with my faults, too.

We both knew that the other person was going to struggle at times, but we were both dedicated to the relationship and helping each other be better than we were before. It wasn’t always easy, but I could say without a shadow of a doubt in my mind that it was always worth it.

We had a strong foundation, and I knew we would last the test of time. It would only get better from here, I was sure of it. Even when the day came that we did have kids together, I knew that we were going to work through the hardship that came with that.

We both knew that as long as we both put the other person first, then we were both going to be happy in the relationship. That was the important thing here, and that was what mattered to us. We didn’t want to compete with each other, we wanted to be better than the people we were yesterday, and that was making us happier than ever.

“Alright, let me change,” I said. “Then we can get going. Where did you want to go?”

“It’s a surprise,” he said. “But put on one of your dresses. Your favorites,” he said. “I’m wearing my favorite t-shirt, so do the same.”

“You’re so weird,” I told him as I slipped into my favorite casual dress. “Who wears a t-shirt to dinner?”

“I do,” he said with a grin.

I shook my head but went with him. He drove us to the restaurant himself, and I was glad that he had a car. It was a lot easier for us to own a vehicle than it was for us to rely on Uber all the time, and after the few months when I did, I promised myself we were going to have at least one car between us. The day could still come when I would get my own, but at least with Greyson having one, we were able to go places together.

He took me to a restaurant that looked empty, and I was confused.

“Is this place even open?” I asked.

“Come on, you’ll see,” he said.

We headed inside, and I gasped when I realized that he had rented out the entire place. We were the only two people in the restaurant, and all the servers were there to make sure our night was perfect. I was shocked with how much effort he had put into this, and I turned to him with a grin.

“You mean you did this all for me?” I asked. “All for a promotion?”
