My cheeks turned red. Boston was so close to New York that I knew that Eli was going to be pissed when he found out that I was here and hadn’t told him. I couldn’t blame him, but I prayed he would understand my reasoning.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.

“I’m going to Harvard.”

“Harvard?” A small smile overtook my lips. For the last six months, I’d wondered if Eli’s father had relented. My own would not tell me. Marco Blanchi had had one request of my father—keep me away from Eli.

I couldn’t blame him for asking, and it was one of the few things I respected.

“But that doesn’t answer my question, why are you here?”

Looking around, I felt like all eyes were on us. After all, we were holding up the line, so it was kind of hard for people not to look.

“Can we talk somewhere else?”

Eli released a breath, and I knew he was frustrated. “We just started talking…”

I grimaced. “I know, but I think this is a conversation we might not want to have in public considering…” I left the remainder of the sentence hanging.

“Do you still have my number?”

I nodded, feeling nervous. The question was a normal one, but there was a part of me that wondered if it was a condemnation.

“Will you call me tonight? We can have dinner.”

“Can you come to my place?” I asked. Cambridge wasn’t too far from the North side, and I would rather be in my own place.

There was a long pause, and I wondered if Eli was going to say no. Even now, he was hard to read. His dark eyes looked at me as though he were taking inventory of every inch of my body, and it made me shiver.

“Text me the address,” he said.

“Okay.”

We stood there for a few moments, neither of us sure what to say to the other.

“I’ll see you tonight,” I said finally.

“See you.”

The entire afternoon had gone by in a blur. I literally had no idea what I’d done since leaving the coffee shop. I needed to get some work done, but I couldn’t. The last time that Eli and I saw one another, we were saying goodbye.

I’d been sure I was on my way to jail, maybe for life, and I’d been determined to keep Eli out of it. After all, enough people already paid for my mistakes.

But things were different now.

In some ways, anyway.

Prue was going to be gone for the evening with her latest hookup, and that made it feel as though there was even more pressure on this situation right now.

So, when there was a quick knock on my door, I nearly jumped out of my skin. Looking in the mirror, I smoothed down the flyaway hairs that were surrounding my face, trying to make myself look more presentable. Because I was sure that Eli would look great.

“Hey,” I said as I opened the door.

Eli was indeed handsome on the other side of the door. He was in black jeans and a long, navy-blue Henley that showed off every definition of his abs, and it took everything in me not to reach out and rub my hands down them.

“Hey.”
