“But not Eli?” I couldn’t help it. I was curious.

Personally, I thought that Eli was the more handsome of the three. There was a quiet intensity about him that spoke to me. Unlike Matteo, Eli was more discerning. And unlike Luca, I could tell that Eli was more subdued.

Plus, his body was insanely hot. I didn’t even know that an eight pack was possible, but I shouldn’t have been surprised to see one on Eli. I was starting to realize that there was nothing that he did that was half-assed.

“Eli has never been with anyone publicly,” Sophia said.

I snorted. “That’s a very diplomatic answer. Matteo likely hasn’t been with anyone publicly either.” Matteo seemed to have a new girl on his arm every day. It was a miracle the guy’s dick hadn’t fallen off.

“Eli has never hooked up with anyone publicly.” Sophia lifted her hands. “Is that better?”

The thought of Eli with another girl made my stomach flip. I didn’t know why. We’d slept together twice, and he’d spent the night in my bed. But again, I reminded myself that that didn’t mean much of anything.

Sophia wrapped her hand around my wrist. I’d begun picking at the skin on my lips. It was a nervous habit that I’d developed years ago, and it was one that my mother absolutely detested.

“If something happened between you and Eli, there’s nothing that you have to worry about. Eli’s a good guy.”

I wasn’t sure if any man was inherently good. Even Caleb, who’d mostly been harmless, had not held up. When the situation got too hard, he’d split. And Caleb had never had the type of effect on me that Eli did.

“He also wouldn’t take you to Harvard with him if he wasn’t into you.”

“What makes you think that?” It was becoming clearer as I talked to Sophia that there was so much about Eli that I did not know. How could I have such intense feelings for someone that I barely knew?

“I told you before.” Sophia leaned back in her chair. “Harvard is like a huge part of Eli’s identity. He must like you if he’s taking you with him.”

“Or he just feels bad for me.” There was a question at the end of that, and I tried not to grimace at the sound of it. I hated how much reassurance I was looking for from Sophia.

“Eli is a nice guy, but I have never seen him do anything that he did not want to do. If he’s asked you to go away for the weekend, then he’s into it.” Sophia looked like she was going to start bouncing in her seat. “You should wear some of that sexy lingerie I placed in your shopping pile at Barney’s.”

I rolled my eyes at Sophia. She had taken full advantage of my father’s open credit card, and she had bought me everything from perfume to frilly underwear.

“I’m not going to wear any of that.”

Sophia smirked. “You should,” she said. “I think Eli would lose his mind. If it wasn’t sex related, I would want a photo of Eli Blanchi losing his shit. It would be priceless.”

This caused me to giggle. Apparently, Eli’s control was legendary.

“What are you ladies so giggly about?” Matteo slid into one of the seats next to us, and Sophia shut down so quickly that I was surprised she didn’t turn to stone in the process.

“What are you doing here?” The mirth was gone from her voice. “I thought Daddy paid a handsome sum to keep you from having to do summer school.”

This was news to me, and I felt my hackles raise slightly. Marco could have thrown that weight my way. It would have been much more appreciated.

“He did,” Matteo said, kicking his feet up on the table. Sophia looked like her head was about to explode, and I wanted to laugh my ass off. We hadn’t been friends for long, but I suspected no one made her quite as angry as Matteo. Sometimes, it was fun to watch. He turned to me. “But I’ve been sent to play fetch.”

I frowned. “Where’s Eli?” I asked. “I thought he was my handler.”

Matteo rolled his eyes. I wondered if he’d ever been truly concerned about anything in his entire life. Even his annoyance had an air of nonchalance. A large part of me was jealous of his ability to flirt through life unscathed.

“He is.” It would have shocked me how easily Matteo gave up information if I suspected he cared. “But he had to take his car into the shop. They were supposed to be done with it an hour ago, but he got held up.”

“What was wrong with his car?” I didn’t even know Eli had his own car. Just another thing that reminded me of how much I felt for someone who was a mystery.

“Someone slashed the tires.”

My mouth dropped open. “What!” A small chill ran up my spine.

“Chill,” Matteo said. “It’s happened before.”
