“Like?”

“Smells.” The smell of my family’s blood haunted my nightmares. Sometimes, I caught the slightest scent of copper and would gag at the scent. “And the voice of the men who were there.”

“They talked?”

I nodded and released a heavy exhale. This was the part that had haunted me after last night. “And I recognized one of the voices.”

Sophia’s eyes went wide. “Really? Who?”

I hesitated to speak the words aloud. I had no evidence of what I thought, but last night, I couldn’t stop my mind from turning over and over what I had somehow always known.

“Caleb Strong. My ex-boyfriend.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-FOUR

“Don’t you think we are taking the jealous boyfriend thing a bit far?” Luca asked as he leaned against the side of the building. He looked as carefree as always, and I rolled my eyes at the sight of him, even though I didn’t take my eyes off the building across the street. “What would Carla think if she knew you were stalking her ex?”

“I’m not stalking anyone,” I snapped. “And if it were Ingrid…”

“The asshole would be dead.” Luca stood up at the mention of his girlfriend. “But you and Carla aren’t dating.”

Luca was trying to get me to break, but he was going to learn that it wasn’t that easy. I hadn’t slept last night. I hadn’t been able to. So, I’d spent the night tearing through the evidence files Matteo found, trying to find anything I could.

“Carla is under my protection.”

“And you think her ex is a problem?”

My mind flashed back to the night before. Carla had been terrified, and I was sure he would have raped her if I had not kicked down the door. Carla might blame the drugs, but I didn’t buy it. There was something about Caleb, even that first day I saw him, that I recognized.

He was angry.

Very much so.

“I think he might be dangerous.”

Luca snorted. “In danger of overdosing,” he said, gesturing towards the front of the door. Caleb was walking out, and he looked like shit. I could see that even from across the street. Caleb was tall, but he was starting to look a little gaunt. There were dark circles under his eyes, and his clothing was rumpled. “He looks like he’s tweaking.”

“He’s coming down from whatever he took last night,” I explained.

Luca’s brow rose, but he didn’t press me for more information, which was why he was the one that I asked to come with me. That and the fact that Luca owed me. I’d helped him protect Ingrid, and I’d never asked for anything in return.

“Are you planning to kill him?” he asked.

Last night, I would have answered in the affirmative. I hadn’t been able to think clearly, and if I had the chance, I would have ended Caleb’s life. I almost had.

But now, I had more pressing issues. “I want to know where he’s going.”

“Probably to get more drugs.”

I shook my head. “No.” I was sure that was not what he was doing. “There was enough in that house that I’m pretty sure someone is dealing out of there. He doesn’t need to leave the place to score. He’s doing something else.”

Luca said nothing, but I could see a lot going on behind his eyes. “You think that this guy has something to do with what happened to Carla’s family, don’t you?”

“Yes.” That was all I gave Luca as I started tailing Caleb. I worried that he might be going to find Carla, but he was walking in the opposite direction from where she currently was with Sophia.

Just because I told Carla that nothing should have happened between the two of us, didn’t mean that I was just going to let this asshole go after her, and he seemed like the type of person who would do just that.

“I thought you weren’t going to look at the files Matteo found.”
