I drop my gaze and sigh. “Nothing.”

“You afraid you’re going to get hurt again?”

My head snaps up. “Have you ever had your heart broken, Jack?”

He tilts his head and scoffs. “Who hasn’t?”

“It sucks, doesn’t it?”

He nods. “But you move on, Savannah. You move on.”

Something in his eyes makes me believe he understands my hesitation.

“I’m not a bad guy.”

“Okay. I’ll consider your invitation to dinner then.”

Without warning, he leans in, kisses my cheek, and pauses for a moment. “Thank you for the haircut,” he murmurs against my skin.

Unable to form any words, I close my eyes and breathe in his scent.

When he walks away and climbs into the town’s newest vehicle, I raise my hand and wave as a smile grows on my face. “I can’t believe you drove the firetruck.”

The passenger window descends slowly, and he blows the horn three times and yells out, “One of the perks of being Chief!”

I cover my mouth and laugh. “You’re crazy!”

ChapterSeven

Sweeping up the soft tufts of Jack’s hair, I erase any sign of his unexpected visit. A sigh escapes when I remember how it felt to run my fingers through his hair and massage his head. The sensation of touching him so intimately sends a shiver down to my toes. I’ve washed hair so many times, but with Jack, it felt like more. So much more.

Tiptoeing on the step stool, I stretch, attempting to clean the top of the mirror with my rag.

“Mom, what are you doing?”

I catch Kylie’s eye in the mirror.

“Cleaning.”

“You’re gonna fall and break an ankle or something. Can’t have you on crutches for your birthday!”

I roll my eyes and give the mirror one last swipe. Satisfied, I step down and freeze when I notice Jack’s red ball cap on my chair.

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing, why?”

“You look like a deer in headlights.”

Joanna joins in Kylie’s amusement. “Is this because you’re getting closer to the BIG 40?”

I narrow my eyes playfully. “I thought you needed this job?”

She grimaces and makes a motion to zip her lips.

“Totally forgot about my birthday,” I lie. “I’m more concerned about the event. I hope they raise a lot of money.”

As soon as the girls walk into the back room, I shove Jack’s hat into the drawer that stores extra capes. Thankfully, each station has its own.
