Although Kylie unpacks the boxes of new products and tends to her clients, she notices and comments on my distraction. All day, my thoughts have been bouncing back and forth between two men. I feel a connection with both despite having known each for only a short time.

“Mom, you okay?” she asks, noticing that I’m staring into space.

I nod. “I’m good. Just got a lot on my mind.”

She doesn’t believe me. “Stop worrying about your birthday! You’re turning thirty-eight, not ninety-eight.”

I smile tightly. “I guess I thought my life would be different at this age.”

“How so?”

“I thought I’d be in a serious relationship or even married by now.”

“What about that guy, Jack? He’s hot as fu-”

“Kylie,” I warn, tossing a stern glance in her direction.

“Oh, my God! Seriously? Don’t tell me you didn’t notice how good he smelled.”

“I am not having this conversation with you,” I reply as I clean the sinks.

She makes a sour face and sticks out her tongue. “Fine! Then I’m not discussing my love life with you either.”

“Good! I don’t want to hear about all the guys who are trying to hook up with my daughter anyway.”

As soon as the words leave my mouth, I think of Tre. He wants to meet me. And truth be told, I want to meet him, too, but only if he’s not seeing Kylie anymore. If he broke up with her and she’s never met him, she’ll never know the truth. I walk to the bathroom, open the app and read his response.

DanDad007: Yes, she’s not who I want.

I bite my bottom lip, unable to control the fluttering in my belly even though my conscience warns me that I’m doing something wrong. I feel like everyone notices my looks of shame.

By five o’clock, once we’ve made sure all the appliances have been unplugged, I lock up the salon and exit through the back door.

“Mind if I ride with you?” Kylie asks as she continues to text. “I’m meeting with some friends after.”

“Of, course.”

While she rounds the back of the car, I notice a small piece of paper wedged under the front wiper. My curiosity is piqued because solicitors don’t usually come to the back parking lot, and I have a sign in the window. I grab my phone, turn on the flashlight and read the note.

Dinner at my place or yours?

Jack knew I was going to say yes. My reddened cheeks stretch as I smile and then glance into the car. Before Kylie can ask about the note, I shove it into my pocket. During the drive to the boutique, I hear Kylie’s voice, but I’m not listening to a single word coming out of her mouth. All I can hear is Jack’s deep timbre in my head, feel his lips on my cheek and smell his cologne.

I park my Honda in front of the store, realizing afterward that I’m partially blocking the fire lane. “I should move.”

“It’s okay,” Kylie says, pulling me along. “You have an in with the Chief.”

“Grampa’s not Chief anymore,” I retort.

She waggles her eyebrows. “I wasn’t talking about him!”

Grateful that Kylie thought to call ahead, Britni has a rack of dresses ready for us to try on. It takes me no time to find a simple, yet sexy black dress for the occasion.

“Mind if I…help you out here?” Britni asks, pointing to my boobs.

I extend my arms to the side and let her adjust my girls to maximize my cleavage.

“Wow, Mom! You’ve got great tits!”
