Saying the words out loud felt even more stupid than thinking them. I couldn't look Lindsey in the face, but I could tell her gaze was on me. She must have been surprised. Well, who wouldn't be?
Lindsey reached to accept the phone from me, "Good afternoon, ma’am."
I watched her as she spoke to my mother. Her shocked expression slowly changed, and soon enough, she was smiling. I was curious as to what my mama was telling her. Watching her talk to my mother gave me a weird sense of satisfaction. I didn't know why, but it just felt right.
They spoke for about three minutes before Lindsey handed my phone back to me, smiling.
"Hello," I said, announcing I was back on.
“That was a lovely lady. She sounds courteous and professional and really smart. Why don't you hang out with people like her?" She asked bluntly.
I frowned. This was new! She would usually complain about every woman I was with. I looked back at Lindsey who had returned to whatever she had been doing before the call.
Why does Mama find you different?
"You're not getting any younger, you should find a good girl and settle down." She began her sermon about me finding a wife.
I already knew the next line that was coming after the find-a-nice-girl statement, she would talk about how she wasn't getting any younger herself, and then about her friends who had become grandmothers.
"I would like to see my grandchildren before I go, you know."
Ah Hah! Bingo!
She would guilt trip me to death if I let her.
And you do.
I hated it whenever she did that, but I knew she only did so out of concern and love. But it still didn't change the fact that it messed with my head.
"Mama, in due time I will. But as for now, work is too demanding." It was always the same excuse from me, too. "I have to go, Mama; I think I might be onto something," I said, trying to end the conversation before it spun into something else.
"Do come back to see me soon. And Trev, I know you. Please try to eat regularly and take care of yourself. I love you, son."
"I love you, Mama." With that, I ended the call.
I turned back to see Lindsey staring at me. I felt a bit embarrassed, but I played it cool. I was curious to know what she and my mama had discussed that had her smiling all through their conversation. But I also knew asking her was not an option. Not that she would be willing to tell me if I did.
My mind went back to work. I had been in this town for almost two weeks, but I still had nothing to show for it. I was starting to think my coming here was a waste of time. This dramatic change of pace did nothing to stir my creative juices. Eric was wrong. He had made it sound so easy, like all I had to do was just “get away from it all,” have a “change of pace,” and the veil that blocked my creativity would be lifted.
I had been trying my damndest, but I was getting nowhere.
I placed an ultimatum on myself: If, in the coming week, I didn't make headway with a new gaming concept, I’d leave the Lodge and head home.
I set myself that deadline in the hope that it would set a fire in my soul.
Chapter 10
Lindsey
Istaredindisbeliefas he spoke to his mother. I had not once thought he would have such a loving and respectful relationship with his mother. He seemed too full of himself to care about anyone else, but from the way he spoke with his mother on the phone, I could tell he cared a lot about her.
His face softened up while he spoke with her. And the fact that he kept calling her “Mama.” Have I ever known a man who calls his mother “Mama?”
So sweet.
I wondered what he would be like around her. But all that thought disappeared as soon as he dropped the call. The air around him changed; it was as if he had become possessed by some spirit. The same man that had seemed all adorable on the phone a few seconds ago was back to being his arrogant self.
Sweet woman. I was surprised that she wanted to chat with me.
