Emily laughed… and then began sobbing wildly.

“I don’t know what to do…”

“Karen, get in the car and keep her on the phone,” Chase ordered in the distance, and Emily heard her sister’s voice once again.

“Emily, we are on the way. What’s going on? You can talk to…”

“I need you to stop by the drug store,” Emily whispered tearfully.

“Are you sick? Did you throw your back out? What do you need?”

“A pregnancy test…”

Karen burst out laughing happily, and she could hear Chase questioning her in the distance.

“It’s not funny.”

“It’s a blessing and a godsend… I’ll stop on my way.”

“Don’t say anything to Chase.”

“He’s right here – and it’s going to be hard to hide.”

“Oh my gosh, what am I going to do? John and I… well, we don’t need to be having a child right now, and…”

“First things first – breathe,” Karen instructed. “Drink some tea and calm down. We’ll be there shortly and can figure this out. If our six-foot-tall lovable dweeb can handle…”

“HEY!” Chase protested.

“You’ll be fine,” Karen said softly. “I’ll see you in ten minutes.”

Emily nodded and hung up the phone, her mind reeling.

This was going to be some homecoming…she thought wretchedly, her mind flashing back to John’s sheer panic that morning at the hotel room in Vegas, when he was searching for a condom and asked about her being on the pill.

They were exceedingly careful the rest of the time that they were intimate, but neither were completely sure what had happened that night… and obviously something major had happened.

“He’s going to be so upset…” she sobbed, putting her head down in her hands and waiting.

This was the worst timing ever.

If she was pregnant, that would put her having a baby smack-dab in the middle of tax season. What was John going to say? Her parents would absolutely lose their ever-lovin’ minds, because they hadn’t even met John yet… so she wasn’t sure if they were going to like her new husband or not.

She was not ‘mother’material either.

When people tried to hand her kids, she politely declined. Runny noses, poopy diapers, and drooling babies didn’t do a thing for her… except push her in the other direction. She figured that maybe someday she would feel those maternal urges, maybe she would have a child or a family of her own… but now?

The door to her little apartment opened and she heard Chase and Karen coming up the stairs, sounding like a herd of elephants.

“Emily?” Karen began, kneeling down beside her as Chase plopped down on the couch next to her, immediately hugging Emily.

“Let me tell you, brat…” her brother said huskily, his voice thick with emotion. “You’ll find a way to handle this. Okay? I wasn’t ready to be a dad, but I wouldn’t trade my life with Johnny for anything… It’s gonna be fine.”

“Chase is right,” Karen said gently. “Babies are blessings. Do you remember when Johnny came? How he was so chubby and cute? There is something so magical about seeing something created that is part you – and part your spouse.”

“Johnny is mostly me,” Chase bragged. “That boy is a mess like his ol’ dad.”

“I’m glad,” Karen said flatly, causing Emily to start in surprise, just before she let out a choked laugh. Karen never said a cross word about Honey ever before, and this was surprising.
