John actually cursed under his breath, causing her to look at him in surprise as he yanked off his sunglasses, tossing them up on the dash like it was a practiced move.

“Is the car in park?” he said hotly in frustration that seemed to just seethe off of him in waves.

“Yes. Why do you…”

Emily was stunned to see him reach over and unbuckle her belt – only to physically pull her against him a second later, meeting in the center of the front bench seat of her car. His lips touched hers with no hesitation, indicating that he was going to actually kiss her.

She froze in his arms for the split second that it took for her brain to acknowledge what gibberish was screaming aloud in her head from somewhere deep down inside of her.

OMIGOSH HE’S ACTUALLY KISSING YOU HE’S KISSING YOU KISS HIM BACK YOU FOOL KISS HIM KISS HIM KISS HIM KISS HIM BACK NOW… NOW NOW NOW NOWNOWNOWNOW!!!

Mortified, she made a noise and wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him back… only to hear a faint soft laugh from him, before he kissed her again.

His lips were so warm, so soft, yet so firm… and having his arms around her made her feel downright feminine and petite. He broke the kiss a few moments later and sighed against her lips, not moving or pulling away from her.

“Friends don’t do that,” she uttered nervously, fighting the urge to make light of it, because she was frightened of being hurt. That was her first kiss, and boy was it one for the record books!

She’d never kissed a man with facial hair, and decidedly like it.

Every nerve in her was alive at the simple display of affection between them, and she now understood the slogan for Klondike bars - because if someone asked her right now?

The list of things she’d do for a Klondike bar was a very long, shameful, horrifying list… and she’d doanyof it happily.

“It’s a real date,” he whispered, rubbing his nose slightly against hers, almost in a caress. “Not apity dateor whatever thing you want to call it. It’s our second date, Em…”

“John…”

“I probably should have done that last night,” he chuckled softly, reaching up to touch her cheek, making her eyes water almost instantly at how bittersweet and tender it was. “Maybe I shouldn’t have, because I know I’m having to fly back out tomorrow, but I couldn’t help myself.”

“I think my brain has some wires crossed…”

“Mine just fried itself…” he uttered openly, causing her to laugh nervously.

“What are we even doing? I mean, youryou… and I’mme… and this doesn’t happen or…”

“Is your entire day available?” he whispered softly, not moving as he held her close, looking at her. His eyes searched hers as he waited.

“Yeah.”

“Good,” he began. “Let’s get a cheap burner phone in case it gets destroyed in the desert, we’ll grab the coffee to go… and I want to take you flying.”

“You do?” she gaped, her eyes widening in shock.

“Are you scared of heights?”

“No.”

“Perfect,” he smiled. “I want our second date to be just as memorable as the first…”

“Really?” she whispered, unable to hide the way his words touched her soul, and the gentleness behind them. “You aren’t just being nice or…”

He kissed her again… this time it was hot enough to fry an egg on her forehead, and when they broke, they were both breathing hard.

“I hope it doesn’t feel like I’m ‘just being nice’…” he said in a gravelly voice that made her shiver in awareness. “There’s a whole lot more there between us than just ‘nice’. That feeling makes me as jittery as a cat in a room full of rockin’ chairs - just like you seemed to be a few moments ago,” he began, before releasing her.

Emily scooted back to her seat, buckled up, and glanced back at him to see him watching her with avid interest.

“I needed to kiss you to get it out of my system, because it kept me up last night. As much as I’d like to just stay here kissing you all afternoon until the sun sets? I don’t think that is a good idea for either of us, considering we just met.”
