“A little bit of craziness and a whole heaping lump of hope…” he said evasively, nearly bursting at the seams. “I’m going to do the craziest thing in May, and I hope it works out for me.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah,” John grinned happily, unable to keep the information to himself. Thiswasthe craziest thing he’d ever done, and he was leaping wildly into a relationship with his Emily. “Remember how you said you were going travelling with a friend?”

Vapor actually paled slightly, looking slightly greenish around the gills.

“Yeah, I said I waspossiblygoing travelling with a friend – why?”

“Because I took what you said and bit the bullet… I’m meeting up with my girlfriend when she takes her next trip.”

“You have a girlfriend? I thought you weren’t interested in having a girl to talk to. You always seem so content…oh my gosh…”

Vapor suddenly breathed, looking horrified at John - and even more green, if that was at all possible.

“Dude, are you okay?”

“No… not really,” Vapor breathed looking away. “You aren’t traveling with your pen pal – are you?”

“Yeah,” John grinned. “How’d you guess?”

Vapor dragged in several deep breaths and reached for a small trashcan nearby, hanging his head over it.

“You’re going somewhere in May with… with Jana… Sorensen?”

“What?”John asked, rearing back in shock before laughing. “Oh goodness no! We write each other, but there’s not much else there. I’m going with Emily Marks – the girl I met at the wedding? Remember her? You walked down the aisle with her? Big, beautiful eyes and electric smile that lights up a room? That’s my friend… are you okay, Vapor?”

“Emily?” Vapor repeated bluntly. “You are pickingEmilyoverJana?”

“There’s no ‘picking’because there’s never been much between Jana and me other than chit-chat… but Emily?” John sighed happily. “She’s incredible.”

“Are we talking about the same girl? Skinny, flat-chested, pointy-nose, and glasses?ThatEmily?”

“She’s got the most incredible personality and just makes me feel like a kid, honestly… and yeah, that Emily,” John smiled knowingly and a little relieved, but slightly confused at his description of her.

Emily was breathtakingly beautiful, and he certainly didn’t see her like Vapor was portraying in the slightest.

“I’m glad you aren’t interested, or competition.”

“Oh no… we’re good, man,” Vapor said quickly, holding up his hands and smiling. “Can you keep a secret?”

“Yeah,” he admitted, glancing at Vapor cautiously. “Please don’t say anything to Hot Cakes about Emily, because it’s all so new and I don’t want her sister Karen to talk her out of going to Vegas with me.”

“Y’all are going to Vegas?”

“Her convention is there and I’m going to meet her there.”

“Ahhh… I see,” Vapor leaned forward smiling nervously. “Please don’t say a word…”

“I won’t.”

“Jana and I are planning to get away somewhere and haven’t decide on a place yet…”

“Is that why you looked sick to your stomach?” John laughed, clapping a hand on Vapor’s shoulder and grinning at the other man. “Brother, I’m so happy for you both. Jana’s so sweet and I think you would do really well together… just take it easy and keep all of this between us.”

“My thoughts exactly.”

“I’m gonna get some coffee, see what they say at the briefing, and check if they have anything new at the exchange. Do you want to go with me? Oh, and by the way, in case he doesn’t say anything in the meeting? Reilly moved the briefing tomorrow up to six in the morning.”
