“It might be really boring.”

“I’m good at occupying myself. People travel all the time together and I would be flying somewhere anyhow – and so would you. We could meet and then have a nice time in Vegas.”

“You mean this, don’t you?”

“I’m serious as could be. The flight is almost fifteen hours either direction, so it’s the same, but I…”

“Seriously?”

“We could paint the town in the evenings, see a show, or maybe…”

“I’d like that,” she admitted softly, realizing that it might be fun to get away with John. It would certainly make the trip a lot more enjoyable, because then she wouldn’t be alone, wouldn’t be hiding up in her room watching television, or just sitting there bored and people-watching.

“You would?”

“This is crazy… but yes, I would.”

“I’ll book a room as soon as I get my time off approved – just email me the dates…”

“John,” Emily hesitated, feeling her face flush wildly at how forward she was about to be. “You don’t have to. I booked a suite because they had a block set aside for guests and vendors. There are two beds, a couch, and kitchenette. It was the same price as the regular room because of my discount, and I…”

“Oh Emily…” he replied huskily, making her cheeks even hotter. “I would love to shack up with you for a few days in Sin City.”

“Cool it, buster,” she sputtered – making him burst out laughing on the phone. “There are two beds! TWO! … And a couch!”

“I know, I know…” he chuckled in delight. “I’m just teasing you because I love how you react. Well, send me the dates then, what time you are arriving, and the hotel information. I’ll try to book my arrival at the same time… and look for a way to take my girl out on the town.”

“I’ll send my schedule then, too…”

“Sounds like we have a date.”

“I guess so.”

“I’ve gotta go,” he said softly. “Gosh, I loved hearing your voice.”

Emily swallowed tightly, realizing she was thinking the same thing.

This outgoing, sweet man with the thick drawl to his voice sure got under her skin. She was really coming to like him, much too quickly, and this was all so strange to let her defenses down around him. They just seemed to fall into place together like two puzzle pieces.

It was weird – and strangely wonderful.

“I’m really glad you called,” she whispered. “Bye, John.”

“Bye,cher,” he said and ended the call before she could speak or say anything else.

CHAPTER12

X-RAY

John shotout of his seat, fist-pumped the air, and let out a shout of sheer joy and happiness.

He was going to see Emily again!

She liked the flowers, thought he had a gorgeous smile, and had even invited him to share the hotel room… even if it was genuinely modest, completely friend-zoned, and most basics of terms that they shared a small space.

That was not something he’d expected or anticipated.

“What’s got you so fired up, X-Ray?” Vapor laughed, peering in the computer room at that exact moment.
