“Mrs. Marks?” John said gently, hopping on the call. “My name is John Masden and…”

Emily’s phone began to warble noisily as she was suddenly receiving a FaceTime request from her mother.

“Get ready,” she warned, and saw John quickly move to sit right behind her, his head appearing just over her shoulder in the screen of the phone as she answered the call.

“Hey Mom…” Emily smiled tearfully. “This is John… my friend that sent me the necklace,” she explained, holding up the little glass capsule – only to have her mother’s face get extremely close to the phone before yelling…”

“HONEY! GET IN HERE NOW! YOUR DAUGHTER IS ON THE PHONE AND SPORTIN’ A MASSIVE ENGAGEMENT RING!”

“WHAT?”

Emily winced, hearing her father yell from the other room – and covered her eyes as her father walked into the camera screen in a white T-shirt and boxer shorts.

“Daddy, put some clothing on,” Emily muttered openly, hearing John smother a nervous laugh behind her. “Mom, tell dad that you are calling me using FaceTime, so he has a little dignity.”

“It’s fine.”

“What is going on? Who is that?”

“That’s the young man from Karen and Jace’s wedding…”

“Oh yeah… I remember they were dancing and,” her father paused for a moment at her mother’s knowing look. “Let’s see the ring.”

Emily held up her hand, smiling at John.

“Very pretty,” her father said gently. “Tasteful, and very much Emily’s style.”

“Classic,” John began, and then looked at the screen – and she felt him clench her hand off screen, realizing he was nervous. “And on that note, I’d like to speak with you regarding our marriage.”

“Go ahead.”

“Well, sir, I’d like your permission to marry her… because we got married today,” John volunteered, his voice shaking slightly. She quickly held his hand instead, giving it a slight squeeze, and tucked her head against his chin in understanding and support.

“You… you got marriedtoday?”

“Yes, sir.”

“In Las Vegas?”

“You just both happened to be there – at the same time?”

“No sir, we planned on seeing each other again as soon as we could – and I had vacation time arranged, so I flew into town to see her.”

“Daddy,” Emily began, interrupting seeing her father’s frown. “I’m so happy.”

“How long have you known my daughter and why haven’t we met you?”

“I met her at Karen and Jace’s wedding… and I’m stationed overseas with Jace, so we’ve mostly emailed or talked on the phone…”

“And you married my daughter, my sweet, naïve girl, the second time you have had the chance to meet her?” her father’s voice was getting louder and louder – and her mother was trying to calm him down. “You flew into town, married my daughter, andthenyou decide to talk to her mother and I?”

“Sir, I wanted to tell you right away…”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Well to be honest we were…”

“Daddy, what exactly do you want to hear?” Emily snapped in frustration. “Do you want to hear that we both got rip-roaring drunk, got married, had mad-monkey-sex, and then woke up with terrible hangovers? Is that what you want to hear? Or do you want version number two?” she hesitated.
