She was feeling exceedingly nervous, because she’d just blurted out the truth and was trying to throw her parents off track of what had actually happened between them… or what they had surmised had happened from the bits and pieces they had put together.

“Or that we were so happy driving back from Lake Mead and stopped at the first chapel we could find, exchanged the most beautiful wedding vows, and we are so stupidly in love that we wanted to share our happiness with you both…”

Emily’s voice cracked as she stared at the screen mulishly.

“Which sounds better?” Emily continued hotly – and she knew she probably was shocking John, because he hadn’t made a sound, nor had he moved an inch… only to hear a knock at the door.

John moved to answer it, setting down the domed tray on the table in the distance before sitting down with her again.

“Which is the truth?”

“All of it? None of it? It doesn’t matter, because I’m married to John, and I’m happy. That’s all that counts.”

“Sir,” John spoke, immediately drawing ire from her father as he glared at the screen. “Sir, I love your daughter and if you are not happy with her choice in me, I understand… but that doesn’t change what Emily is to you. She’s an incredible person and I feel blessed to know that she’d even looked at me twice.”

“So, you are stationed overseas, too?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do Jace and Karen know?”

“No, we called you first.”

Her father nodded – and then looked at John pointedly in the screen.

“When do you fly back out?”

“In two days,” John replied, glancing at Emily.

“When you return to the States next time,” her father began tightly. “You are going to fly into townhere, in Tyler, and you are coming to dinner with the family. Am I clear? Emily, no blaming it on that you have to work late… you are coming over with your husband, so we can all talk.”

“I would really like you to meet him,” Emily nodded, smiling nervously at John, who rested a hand on her shoulder gently in silent understanding.

Her parents might not have been happy, but that was because they hadn’t been involved. No, this must be quite the surprise to them… and only her mother possibly had an inkling of how she was beginning to feel when she’d received the necklace from John.

“Well, you know… we would have liked to have met him, too,” her father replied openly.

“Can you be happy for me?”

“Honey, wearehappy for you… we are just concerned because you beat Chase’s record and we don’t want you to end up hurt.”

Emily nodded, feeling her heart thump wildly in alarm. It was true. She technically married John on the second date… which had her brother beat hands down. They may have talked for several months, but this was technically a second, maybe third date between them.

“Guess I’m going to eat crow… and no, I’m not in the same boat as Chase.”

“I hope not.”

Everyone grew quiet for a moment as her parents looked at each other in the screen, before turning back to look at them.

“It’s very nice to meet you, Jim,” her father began politely.

“It’s John…” John corrected, wincing.

“Sorry. It’s nice to meet you, John.”

“You as well, sir.”

“Take care of my baby girl… and Emily?”
