“Yes, Daddy?”
“Be careful… and if you need a different hotel or money…”
“Daddy,” she whispered mortified. “I’m happy and I’m perfectly fine staying with my husband. I love you both, and I just want you to be happy for me.”
Her father nodded, looking a little unsure of what else to say… and she knew she would be going over to talk to them as soon as she got home. They would have a million questions – and she would field as many as possible.
“Call your sister… let her know and see what she says…”
Emily nodded, ended the call, and immediately FaceTimed Karen.
“Well, that didn’t go the way I anticipated,” John whispered nervously.
“I did,” she admitted as her sister appeared on the phone. “Hey Karen…”
“Hey… whoa!WHOOOOAAAA- IS THAT X-RAY??” Karen screeched happily. “OH MY GOSH… ARE YOU TWO…?”
“Volume, Karen…” Emily muttered, feeling her face heat up.
“Sorry!” Karen squeaked happily, grinning with enthusiasm. “Ohhhmmmgee, are you twoa thing…?”
Emily held up her hand, displaying the ring, and smiled at John.
“You’re engaged?”
“We got married,” John volunteered, smiling at Emily.
“YOU GOT MARRIED? HOLY CANNOLI! JACE IS GONNA FLIP HIS LID!”Karen screamed wildly in excitement directly into the phone, causing the both of them to flinch at how loud her voice was. “What did Mom say? What did Dad say? Are you chopped liver? Omg…you beat Chase,didn’t you?”
“Yeah…”
“Apparently there is a story there…” John whispered curiously.
“Later,” Emily whispered absently, and looking at the screen again, she felt herself smiling and feeling lighter already.
“Oh wow… wow! Wow!Wow!Welcome to the family, X-Ray… oh, that’s weird. What’s your first name?”
“John…” he said, smiling at Emily. “It’s John Masden.”
“So, you’re Emily Masden now,” Karen grinned. “Wow. That kinda rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? It sounds almost as good as KarenSorensen…” she finished, winking playfully.
“Something like that,” Emily smiled, feeling John kiss her temple again tenderly.
“Y’all look happy and that’s all that matters – and on behalf of Jace and myself? We are very happy for you both,” Karen smiled tenderly. “I wish you were here so I could hug you both… have you told Chase?”
“He’s my next call.”
Karen nodded – smiling again.
“I’m going to email Jace right now and we’ll see how long it takes for him to call me for the details…” her sister grinned. “I can’t wait to hear his reaction.”
“I want to know, too,” Emily smiled. “Text me when you hear something… love you, Karen.”
“Love you, too.”
She ended the call again – immediately dialing her brother using FaceTime as well. As he answered the phone, she saw he was in full gear, wearing his fire protectant suit and his helmet.
“Em… I can’t talk – what’s wrong…” her brother said in a rush – and hesitated. “Who’s that guy?”
