“Yes!” Lucy screamed after reading a text that came through her phone.

The doctor paused what he was doing and looked over at her.

“Sorry, doc. It’s just that my brother—herhusband—was kidnapped by some weirdos who we thought were working for my dad, but they weren’t actually working for my dad—they were workingagainstmy dad. So, my fiancé, also my brother’s bodyguard, got to work on finding my brother and the kidnappers. It turns out that my mom was the one who saved him by double-crossing my dad with the double-crossing kidnappers,” she gasped, trying to catch her breath. “Anyways, it’s a whole thing.” She laughed, nervously waving it off.

The doctor looked back at me. “Should I be checking her too?”

I giggled nervously. “It’s a family game we’re playing. On the phone.”

“Oh.” He nodded, “That makes sense. Sounds fun.” His face said otherwise. “Anyway, your vitals look great, Mrs. Myles-Miller. Congratulations again. I’ll have the nurse return with your discharge papers, and we’ll get you out of here. Oh, and write down the name of that game. Maybe I’ll download it on my break,” he said to Lucy and then walked out.

Lucy shut the door behind him and then turned to me.

“How is it even possible that this is real life?” I said, putting a hand to my mouth.

Within a matter of two weeks, I managed to reconnect with my college bestie, take a trip to wine country, plan a wedding, get engaged, ride a private jet, get married, be fake pregnant, go on a hot air balloon, make love on said hot air balloon, live in a penthouse in Seattle with my mom and husband, get real pregnant, my husband got kidnapped, found out his parents are some kind of criminal masterminds and now my mom was coming out of a coma.

Am I missing anything?

It’s no wonder I had a panic attack.

“It’ll all work out, Quinn. Don’t you worry.” Lucy came and sat on the edge of my bed. “And hey, maybe now that you’re actually pregnant with my niece or nephew, you’ll stayreal-married to my brother who, thank goodness, is still alive and well?”

I laughed hysterically. “Lu, what the hell have I gotten myself into?”

“An actual shit show. But you know what? I know my brother, and he’s never treated a woman like he treats you. If there is such a thing as a muse, you are it for him.” She pointed a finger at my chest.

“I don’t know.”

“Well, I do. Trust me. You guys are the real deal. Doesn’t matter how fake it started.”

She was right. I could keep hiding from my feelings and trying to justify my hardness of heart because of what I experienced in the past with men who had let me down, including my own father. He didn’t last in our lives for very long; by his own choice. Or I could open my eyes and see things for what they really were and live in that space of accepting that Weston Myles, my now husband, and baby daddy, isn’t the man he once was. Or even the man I made him out to be in my mind.

My phone went off beside me. I picked it up to read a text from Tom. It was two simple words that made my heart soar with relief.

Tom:She’s up!

Tears instantly spilled down my cheeks. She was okay. She was alive and awake and she would be okay.

I removed the blanket from my legs and jumped off the bed and opened the door, “Nurse!”

A woman popped her head around the corner from the nurse’s station.

“I need to go to the ICU. My mama’s awake!”

* * *

I walkedin to find a very swollen and very awake Muriel Miller sitting up in bed. She beamed when I entered the room.

“Mama!” I cried out. I ran to her bedside and threw my arms around her.

“Oh, sugar,” she said to me in a raspy voice. “You were with me every single day. I heard your voice when you talked to me, and read me stories. You kept me going while I was under.”

I couldn’t say anything from the emotions welling up inside of me. I just hugged her and promised to never let her go.

There was some kind of commotion outside her door and some nurses were telling someone they couldn’t be in there.

“We need to see her!” It was Weston. I looked at mama, and she nodded toward the door. I got up and opened the door to see three nurses holding up clipboards, trying to get a wild-looking Weston, scary-looking Jax, and furious Drayven to return to the waiting room.
