“All right, you bunch of crazies. Just like we’ve done every New Year’s Eve since these munchkins were in the bellies. Here are your New Year’s lanterns. Take it over, Jax.”

I started handing out the lanterns to each person. Muriel went around lighting each one.

Jax pulled out a small piece of paper and cleared his throat.

“Hear ye! Hear ye!” he started.

Aiden and Ava chuckled at their weird uncle Jax.

Jax continued.

“Lanterns up!” he commanded and then recited his speech.

“In our hands we hold,

the year of old.

Letting go of spite,

the new year takes flight.

We say bye to what is no more,

And welcome all that awaits us on the shore.

Here’s to another wild and unexpected adventure of a year,

With all of you crazies that we hold dear.

Happy New Year family!”

With that, we all released our lanterns and watched them float peacefully into the night sky. The fireworks continued to burst high above them. They started as one giant group, then slowly expanded further and higher, rising up above the skyscrapers with brilliant haloes.

It reminded me of the night I saw all those balloons rising from the ground.

I looked around at all the faces of the people I loved, and landed on Quinn.

Lucy had taken Luna from her, and she stood behind everyone, smiling and clapping her hands.

My own personal light in all the darkness.

She glanced over at me and motioned with a finger for me to come to her. I moved without even thinking.

“What? No big donation check?” she teased.

“I can give you a big donation anytime you want.” I hugged her from behind and drew her into me, and kissed her neck.

“I’ve got an idea to ring in the new year,” she said, turning to face me.

“Oh, yeah, what’s that, bunny?”

“That one-way window in the bedroom…make it two-way tonight.”

She kissed me and squeezed my ass before taking Luna from Lucy to put her to bed.

My eyes remained glued on her, and she knew it. She turned and winked before heading inside.

Jax had restarted the music, and the family was dancing and laughing on the terrace.
