Chapter One

I peeredthrough the double doors of the vineyard’s large reception hall.

White hydrangeas decorated the aisles, my favorite flowers. I had chosen a white, green, and gold color scheme that had come out perfectly. The entire venue, Hidden Creek Winery, looked perfect. It seemed as if the vineyard had transformed into a secret garden overnight. I couldn’t have asked for more.

Everyone was seated and waiting. My family sat on the left side of the aisle, and Turner's on the right. Turner stood waiting at the altar, his back to the door. He wouldn’t turn until the music changed to indicate I was coming to join him in front of the officiant.

I wished I could see his face. I wanted to know if he felt any remorse. Did he feel guilty? Would he feel that guilt when I delivered my little speech to him? I had rehearsed all morning but knew I wouldn’t make it through. As it was, I felt like breaking down already. It took every spare ounce of strength I possessed just to remain upright.

I looked down at my dress, which took me months to find, with the sweetheart neckline and corset bodice. It shimmered in the low candlelight of the vineyard’s foyer.

Was this dress going to be the symbol of the worst or best day of my life?

There is still a chance,I thought. If he admits what he did, then there may be a chance.

So far, everything had gone off without a hitch. It was going to be the perfect day—up until early that morning, when my brother, Mason, had come to deliver bad news, which meant I had a decision to make.

I could run, or walk down the aisle and face Turner to explain why I was no longer willing to go through with the wedding.

I stood frozen with indecision until my brother’s head turned to the door, and his eyes met mine. He was Turner’s best man—because, of course, he was. They had been best friends since before I was born. Even though Mason had informed me of Turner’s infidelity just a few hours ago, he also told me that he would stand behind me no matter my decision.

He wouldn’t cease his friendship with Turner, though. They had too much history between them. That pissed me off. How could Mason deliver the worst news of my life and maintain a friendship with the man who broke my heart? It was an important discussion we would have to take the time for, but it could happen later.

There was a third option, one I didn’t want to face. I could go through with the wedding and talk to Turner afterward, but wouldn’t he just lie about the whole thing if I confronted him? Once we were married, he had no reason to be honest. And it’s not like he was being honest with me up to this point, anyway.

I inhaled slowly, then released a breath, finally making up my mind.

I pushed the doors open and marched down the aisle. The pianist was confused at first and started playing the song we had chosen for my entrance, but when I didn’t keep the appropriate pace, he stopped playing and instead turned to watch me with a quizzical expression.

Turner turned too, but I didn’t look at him. I couldn’t.

The room was oppressively quiet except for the buzzing of the two hundred guests filling every seat. Every eye in the hall was on me as I marched to stand at Turner’s side. I met Mason’s eyes as I passed him, and he gave me one quick nod.

His support gave me strength, and I held my chin high as I reached the altar. The officiant spoke, still under the mistaken impression that this wedding would happen, and I held up a hand to silence him. The poor man, confused as ever, stepped back, glancing between Turner and me with concern.

I looked at Turner, my would-be husband, for the first time. He had watched in silence as I marched down the aisle, watched as I brushed off the officiant, and watched as I gathered my skirts to stand before him with my head held high.

“Kenna,” he said softly, his eyes alight as he looked me up and down, taking in the sight of me in my gown for the first time. “You look stunning.”

The night before, as I fell asleep, I had imagined his reaction to my dress, and I had hoped he would react as he just did. But now, the awe and affection on his face just twisted the dagger of his betrayal.

“Iknow, Turner,” I whispered, ignoring his statement.

“What do you know?” he asked, his face falling into a deep frown. “What’s going on, Kenna?”

I took another breath, steeling my resolve. “I know you cheated. I know what happened last night at the bachelor party and what you’ve been up to these last few months.”
