My ass is suddenly sweaty as I wriggle in the chair. “I don’thatethem. I just… I…”

“Hate them.”

Aiden smirks. I shrug, but he just stares at me with a knowing look. The heat behind his eyes almost forces it out of me, because after a few seconds, the best I can do is just nod.

“I don’t know what else to say,” I confess.

“Who was he?” Aiden says. “You know I’ll kill him, right?”

My tummy gives a leap.

“That won’t be necessary.” I twirl the wine glass between my fingers and hate the fact I’m thinking about my ex-boyfriend again. “Ethan Pinnock. Quarterback for the LA-”

“I know who Ethan Pinnock is.” Aiden cuts me short. It’s the first time he’s ever spoken over the top of me. There’s a ferocity in his words that I haven’t heard and when I look at him, his has slits for eyes. “And if he’s anything like he is on the field with his women, then he’s not worth another thought. He’s a douche.”

My brows flick up. “You’ve got that right.”

“Plus, he’s a sucky quarterback.”

Again, he’s right – he did suck.

I hold my glass up. “I’ll cheers to that.”

“Didn’t he move last season, anyway?” Aiden asks, his dark lashes blinking rapidly beneath a heavy frown that darkens his entire face. “He’s not in LA…”

I take another sip.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

“No, he’s not there anymore.”

Aiden leans back in his chair. I feel about as big as the droplet of wine running down the rim of the glass in my hand. He’s staring at me, a scorching gaze burning my cheeks. My body is shrinking, and I know this time, there’s no dropping the subject.

Finally, as my ass slides down the chair and my face glows with embarrassment, I admit just how long it’s been.

“We broke up over a year ago.”

“Right,” Aiden hums. He contemplates silently for a minute before looking at me again. “Is that right about the time you lost the role in that new series?”

I sit up and rest my elbows on the table. “Yes. I sort of… lost my way after the breakup.”

That’s the understatement of the century. At one point, I didn’t get out of bed for an entire week.

I’m not sure what I’m expecting. I don’t want sympathy. I don’t want him to feel sorry for me. All I really want, and the only damn reason I came to Canada, is to just move on with my life.

“I’m sorry I haven’t been open with you.” I try a smile that comes out weak and desperate. “In my defence, we did just meet.”

Aiden grins. I’m relieved to see those pearly whites beaming back at me.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.” He reaches across the table and moves his hand over mine. “You’re right. We did just meet. But just so you know… You can talk to me about anything. Anytime. Any place. You understand that, Princess?”

A tiny smile creeps along my lips.

“You keep calling me that…” My voice is soft, almost a whisper as I lock my eyes on his. “Why do you care? You don’t know me. If my dumbass brother didn’t ask you to pick me up, we wouldn’t be here right now…”

A moment of silence lifts his face so he’s sporting a new grin. “I guess I’m the luckiest man in the world then, right?”

His eyes soften as my throat begins to pulse. A steaming plate of salmon is dropped in front of us and the fresh, earthy smell of parsley fills my lungs.
