“Well, I’m alive.”

“What you are is lucky. Don’t do that again. You’ll get yourself killed.”

“I’m not your child,” Sophia commented, biting her tongue to keep from saying more. It’s not worth it,she told herself.

“No, but you’re my friend, and I can worry about my friend.”

Hecould, but that didn’t mean she had to like it.

As Casper continued pulling her along, she drifted off, pressing a finger to her lips, noting the lingering effects of their kiss.

It was a shame that something she had enjoyed so much gave someone else so much shame.

She tried to shake it off. In an attempt to become unbothered by that kiss as possible, she reminded herself that the odds of them crossing paths again were slim to none.

Because, by the end of this week, the two of them may very well be dead.

Chapter Eight

Antonio Payne

Fuck.Antonio couldn’t believe what he just did.I kissed someone other than Giselle,he thought to himself, shame washing over him.

Since the day he met Giselle nearly two hundred years ago, Antonio hadn’t gotten intimate with anyone. It wasn’t difficult to refrain from the sexual desires that might have tempted him to stray. It wasn’t difficult because hehadnone. They died with her, as well as any chance he had at being intimately involved with her.

But today? Gods, when that fey girl kissed him…fireworks.

He shook his head, not wanting to remember what he did. Knowing he was so close to reuniting with Giselle, why the hell did he decide to betray their sacred bondtoday?

She already had difficulty accepting that he was a werewolf. What would she think when she learned he wasn’t faithful to her all these years, giving in to his needs right at the end?

She doesn’t have to know,he determined. In ten days a winner would be chosen, which meant Sophia wouldn’t live through next week. Sophia would be nothing more than a memory.

Antonio scratched his head. Why did that thought bother him so much? He didn’t have a firm grasp on his own emotions.

He needed to free his mind from thoughts of Sophia. He made a mistake, though he didn’t entirely understand what motivated him to make that mistake in the first place. Whatever the reason for that unexpected urge to kiss her, it didn’t matter any longer. Sophia wasn’t his mate. Giselle was. And soon Giselle would be back in his life. Then, all would be right with the world.

What motivated her to kiss him if she hadn’t kissed anyone before? And howyoungwas she?

Too young to fight in The Elaron Games, he’d wager. Too young to die.

Again, his stomach churned at the thought of her dying.

Why the fuck do I care?He didn’t even know the damned girl!

Yet he couldn’t stop replaying their kiss in his mind. There was something about it that was so unlike when he kissed Giselle, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. He wouldn’t dare say it wasbetter. Of course not. Never.

No, he needed to stop these thoughts. Giselle just needed time to understand and accept that he was a werewolf. Once he brought her back to life, he’d give her all the time in the world.

Thankfully, the next full moon was in a few days, beforeThe Elaron Games ended, andjust beforehe revived Giselle. That gave him an entire month to show Giselle how good life with him could bebeforethe next full moon consumed him, his lust for his mate becoming uncontrollable.

With more difficulty than he cared to admit, Antonio willed himself to look back in the direction Sophia had gone in, feeling a pinch disappointed that she was nowhere to be seen.

No, he thought, shaking his head. Not seeing her is agoodthing.

Now if he could just stop those incessant thoughts of her…

“Leaving us without a word, yeah?” Strong hands gripped his shoulders from behind. He’d recognize that voice anywhere. It was Lance, a fellow member of the Payne clan and a good friend to Antonio. “Good thing I found that invite in your room. You really have to learn how to throw things away.”
