“Who do you have in mind?” She ignored what he said, repeating her question.

He huffed in frustration. “Can we talk for a minute?”

“We are talking. Who do you have in mind?”

Dammit, he wasn’t going to get anything out of her. She was too stubborn. He wasn’t going to get the chance to fix this. Knowing he could do nothing killed him inside, but he supposed he deserved to feel this way for impulsively giving in to his urges earlier.

He sighed in defeat. “Someone who has abilities we don’t,” he kept his response vague.

She didn’t press for more information. “Show me the way.”

He nodded, stepping ahead of her as he began his search for the sorceress who almost killed Sophia on the battlefield this evening.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Sophia Brenning

This lunatic wanted them to team up with the sorceress? He was insane!

Sophia gaped in the sorceress’ direction. The woman was sitting beside a dimly lit fire, her eyes glinting with unmasked cruelty. “No. Not a chance.”

“She’ll make a great teammate. She has abilities no one else has.”

Sophia couldn’t believe Antonio was still trying to convince her this was a good idea. Wildly flinging her arms out, she yelled, “Did youforgetwhat happened? Need I remind you?”

Antonio’s stare darkened, his jaw twitching. “I’d rather you didn’t.” It was as if the memory of her being nearly choked to death bothered him as much as it bothered her. If he hadn’t just used her for his own pleasure, without any regard for her emotions, she might’ve ignorantly believed he really was bothered by the memory.

But she knew better now.

“Oh, I’m sorry. The memory bothers you?” She mockingly asked. He narrowed his eyes, straightening his face as he looked at her, but saying nothing. She’d never be able to read this man.He cares for me, he cares for me not…It was an endless game of back and forth in her mind. Now, she finally decided to stay backand stay there for good.He cares for me not.“Guess who else is bothered by that memory? The one who nearly died in it!”

“She’s not going to kill someone on her own team.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do. We were all blindly killing each other in that arena. The sorceress was simply doing what she had to do in order to survive.”

“By killing someonewho wasn’t even attacking her?” Sophia wasn’t anywhere near that sorceress when she lost the ability to breathe, scratching at her throat in a desperate attempt to free herself from something she couldn’t see. She was drowning and couldn’t see the water.

If Antonio hadn’t shown up…

Sophia shook, a chill sweeping over her. She didn’t want to think about it.

“Are you claiming she has some agenda against you? If you know something I don’t, tell me now.”

“I don’t know anything,” Sophia admitted, relaxing a bit. There was no reason this sorceress would want Sophia dead any more than someone else. There was no reason for anyone to have an agenda against Sophia. No oneknewher. For years she hid from the unnatural world inside Trim, then she spent her days hiding in Elaron. She saw little of the unnatural world, and the unnatural world saw little of her.

Antonio nodded. “She wields magic -powerfulmagic - and can strike from afar while we engage in close contact fights. She can help us in ways others can’t.”

He was right, there were benefits in having a sorceress on their team. “If you think she’ll be such a great addition to our team, how can you be so confident that no one else snatched her up already? You can’t be the only one who is aware of her potential.”

“There aren’t many immortals who have encountered a sorceress and lived to tell the tale.”

Sophia was intrigued. “I’m assuming you have?”

Another nod. “My clan’s leader is mated to one.”

Strange, werewolves were almost always paired with other werewolves. Mating with someone from another species wasn’t common. After getting to know Antonio, it was easy to see why. Werewolves were more animal than human, nothing about them making a lick of sense. Animals should stay with animals. It was better that way. For everyone. “Poor girl.”
