“Listen, I noticed something while watching your match today.” He nervously looked behind her. “About Antonio. About Antonio andyou.”

“And what’s that?” Though she was curious about what Casper had to say, her annoyance with him overpowered that curiosity. At this point, she didn’t care much about Casper’s thoughts on anything. Why should she? “Did you change your mind about him? Do you think he’s going to kill me now?” Whatever Casper’s answer was, it didn’t matter to Sophia. She would never believe Antonio intended to kill her.

Did Antonio and her have their differences?

Absolutely.

Did Antonio have any desire to kill her for those differences?

Absolutely not. As difficult as Antonio was to read, that one fact was glaringly obvious.

“No, he’d never hurt you.”

Elaron Knights approached them from across the field, shuffling them off the battleground.

Before Sophia began making her way toward the gate that led off this field she told Casper, “Listen, if my life isn’t at stake around Antonio then whatever you have to say can wait.” She didn’t want to hear what Casper had to say not just because she was annoyed with him, but because she didn’t want anything to ruin her current relationship with Antonio. It was clear that Antonio, Maya, and she worked well as a team. She refused to let anything jeopardize that.

“Fia, coming?” Antonio tried to sound casual, but there was a sort of pleading desperation in his eyes that couldn’t be ignored.

When Sophia heard Casper whisper, “Fia??” under his breath she couldn’t help but smirk.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m coming.” Sophia quickened her pace in an attempt to distance herself from Casper, but he jolted forward, reaching for her hand. She groaned and asked, “Am I safe with Antonio or not?”

“You are,but-”

“Then I’ve heard enough.” She shook her hand free and made her way to Antonio.

But as she walked forward she swore she heard Casper say, “But he’s never going to let you go…”

Sophia decided to shrug off what she believed she heard, deciding it was just a trick of the wind on her ears.

Chapter Thirty

Antonio Payne

Antonio impatiently waited for Sophia to reach him, feeling more restless than he had ever been before. He wanted her with him, notCasper. Antonio hated that damn elf for being attractive. With flawless golden locks and eyes so vivid they nearly glowed what woman could turn him down?

Sophia better turn him down,he thought, his sense of possessiveness over the fey surprising him.

Antonio scratched his stubble, suddenly incredibly aware of his scruffy appearance. He’d have to fix his rugged nature as soon as possible if that’s what it took to win Sophia over.

Because she was his, and he wouldn’t question it again.

Gods, she’s beautiful,he thought as she strutted toward him, somehow managing to look a foot taller than she actually was as she proudly hiked her shoulders back.

Her pride was extraordinary. In fact, everything about her was extraordinary. So why didn’t he see it before? How did he once think she was ordinary compared to Giselle?

Sophia was anything but.

Antonio nearly lost his mind when he witnessed that demon hovering over Sophia, prepared to kill her.

Last time he nearly witnessed her death he realized she was his mate.

This time?

He realizedshewas the one. Not Giselle.

Sophia was witty, determined, and strong. She cared so much for those she loved, maybe even too much. She chose to face death to save her family - something Antonio could never see Giselle doing.
