“He destroyed the amulet?” Sophia’s heart was pounding against her chest so hard she could hardly hear her own words. Her reality seemed to be collapsing around her.

“It was the only way to break that supposedly unbreakable contract and withdraw you from the tournament.” Drusilla remained calm, her stare calculating. “If I’m not mistaken, I believe he and that golden haired high elf worked together to make sure it was destroyed and that you were kicked out of this thing. It’s a shame no one told you. I’m not surprised, I suppose. Powerful women and all.”

Sophia’s chested tightened and suddenly she was struggling to breathe.

It couldn’t be true. It couldn’t.

Yet, as she told herself this, her feet began carrying her away from Drusilla. Away fromAntonio. Somehow, she knew what this witch said was true.

“Don’t forget, men fear powerful women.”

Sophia couldn’t hear anything else Drusilla said. In fact, she could hear nothing but the sound of the wind that whipped against her face as she sprinted back to town with all the swiftness of a fey.

As she ran on, those foreboding claws finally ripped through her heart and mind, slashing them wide open and shattering her completely.

Chapter Sixty

Sophia Brenning

I trusted him!

Pure, unadulterated fury lit Sophia’s veins as she darted past seemingly endless clusters of tents while on her way to the only tent that mattered - Antonio’s. Certainly nothertent. Thinking back to it, she should’ve body slammed Casper to the floor the second he insisted on her staying in that tent.

Why did she listen to that elvish prick, anyway? Probably because of her pathetic undying love for the elf who could never return her feelings.

She trusted Casper, again, despite him continually showing her that trusting him was the last thing she should do.

Then she ignorantly placed her trust in Antonio and that asshole also decided to deceive her. As soon as he could.

The fey back in Trim were right to have warned her to never trust an unnatural being from another species. She should’ve heeded their warnings. If she had, she’d still have the chance to win The Heart of Aphrodite and save her parents.

Screw that amulet and screw Elaron. If Sophia was going to find a way to bring her parents back, she was going to have to conjure enough courage to leave this wretched island, and she’d leave this wretched place exactly as she lived in it -completely alone.

Sophia came to a stop in front of the much too familiar tent she had spent the last week in. It looked darker and more depressing than she remembered it looking before. Perhaps because she had been looking at it with all the ignorance of the lost fey she truly was.

Not today. Not anymore.

She refused to continue being the cowardly, ignorant fey she had been. Sure, she could physically fight, but beyond that she couldn’t do much else. In fact, she only knew how to fight so well because she hadn’t done much else with her life except train herself to do exactly that and nothing more. In fact, she hadn’t left Elaron’s grounds since the day she arrived here.

Her excuse? She needed to train more.

Well, she was done training. It was time to accept that as long as she remained a coward her parents would continue to suffer.

It was time, it wasfinallytime, to set out and get them.

When Sophia saw Cauladra and Conall resting on the grass beside that much-too-familiar tent, her heart skipped a beat, a glimmer of hope that maybe Drusilla had lied sparking inside her.

Throughout this tournament, Cauladra and Conall had come to this tent to help Sophia train and prepare for whatever upcoming match she had that day. If they were here to continue that training, it meant they weren’t aware of any public show Drusilla claimed Antonio had put on.

But when Sophia noticed the guilty looks on their faces and the casual clothes they wore - much too casual for training - her heart dropped.

The twins came to a stand, wiping any dirt off their tanned leather pants. “Hey, Sophia,” Cauladra’s voice oozed with shame, and Sophia’s heart dropped a bit more.

Sophia crossed shaking arms over her chest, taking a step back. “Where’s your training attire? Your weapons?” She alreadyknew the answer, but that hope she couldn’t get rid of begged her to ask. Becausemaybe, justmaybe…

What an ignorant, pathetic fey she was.

“What do you mean?” Cauladra asked, though Conall looked to be struggling to hold back whatever he truly wanted to say.
