Ignoring Cauladra, who had always been much too refined for Sophia’s taste, she bored her eyes into Conall. “Tell me it’s not true.”

“What’s not true?” Cauladra cut in, as if to protect her brother from saying something he shouldn’t.

“Shut up, Cauladra.” Sophia didn’t bother to give her a passing glance, her eyes still set on Conall. “Tell me it’s not true.”

“I’d say, whatever that wolf told you that’s making you act this way, is definitely true.” Conall finally spoke up, the tone in his voice more unsure than she ever recalled hearing it before. “But before we make any rash decisions, let’s talk about this.”

“That wolfdidn’t tell me anything.”

At that, the flap to the tent opened and Lance walked out. “That fucker didn’t tell you?” Disappointment clouded his rugged features. Disappointment and exhaustion - he must’ve had a long night as well.

Not that she cared. They all did, it seemed.

“No, he didn’t. In fact, he’s still sleeping. Some woman told me.” Somewitch, to be exact, but the extra details didn’t matter much.

Lance’s eyes widened, his face becoming panic stricken. “He doesn’t know you left?”

“He doesn’t need to know.”

“You shouldn’t have left him. Where is he? We can figure this out.”

“Wecould havefigured this outbeforehe and Casper decided to get me kicked out of this tournament. Hecould haveincluded me in any conversations regarding my future, myfamily’s future, and the future of my gods-damned species! But he didn’t. So, yes, Ishouldhave left him. And I’d do it again.” But she’d never have to do it again, because she never planned on seeing him again.

“Don’t…” Lance put up two steady hands, approaching Sophia slowly, as if trying to capture and tame some frightened animal. “It’s not a good idea to leave a mated wolf.”

“He’s lost a mate before, he’ll be fine. Eventually.” Sophia took another step back. She wouldnotbe tamed.

“This is different. This isverydifferent.” He took a few more steady steps forward. Sophia took a few more steady steps back.

Something inside her wanted to ask how this was different. The trusting, hopeless romantic in her needing to know. But she held back. It didn’t matter how she might be different from Antonio’s previous mate. All that mattered was that she was betrayed. Byallof them.

“Frankly, I don’t care. Winning that amulet meant everything to me and he knew it. Now it’s gone because of him. I couldn’t be more grateful to that witch for informing me.”

“Whatwitch?” Antonio, more distraught than she remembered seeing him before, stood at Lance’s side, his voice affecting her more than she wanted to admit.

“Does it matter?” Sophia tossed him a disgusted look, trying to ignore his expression - an expression so fearful it ate up the anger within her, replacing it with a fear of her own.

She knew if she wanted to run, she wouldn’t get far. Not with him so near, and especially not with him in this panicked state.

“Stay away from any witches until we get this all sorted out,” he warned.

“The only person I should’ve stayed away from wasyou.”Sophia nearly spat before shooting a penetrating stare at every one of them. “Allof you.” She took another step back, and all of them stepped forward in return.

She began doubting whether or not she actually had any chance at leaving this island.

But just as doubt began to plague her mind, a soft hand landed on her shoulder and suddenly Drusilla was standing next to her. “I can get you out of here, if that’s what you want.”

“Sophia…” Antonio tried to keep his raised hand calm and steady, but it shook as if he believed there would be no tomorrow, terror seeming to cloud his vision. Something told Sophia she should be terrified too, but she was too furious to care. She only wanted to get as far away from here as possible. “Can we talk about this before you make any rash decisions?”

Sophia shot him a withering stare. “Like how you talked to me aboutmyfuture before you made any rash decisions? Oh wait, you didn’t.” Her laughter was filled with malice. Then, she looked at Drusilla and said, “Can you help me find my parents?”

“I can take you anywhere you wish.”

“Fia, don’t do this. You have no idea what you’re about to do.”

“I know what I’m doing. All my life I’ve cared about nothing more than finding my parents, and now that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

“Think about this.” Lance’s calmness was such a stark contrast to Antonio’s distress. “If not for you, do this for Antonio. You’re his mate.”
