“Mm, that’s a toughie,” I said, pondering both. “It’s a choice between cream…and cream…I think I’m gonna go with…cream?”

“You’re not helping,” Lucy pouted.

I laughed. “Honestly, I don’t see a difference. Either is fine. I’m going to make tea while you experts sort it out.” As I started the kettle, I listened to them argue, smiling at Gabe’s contributions. He was obviously very accustomed to acting as referee between Matt and his sister.

Finally, Matt relented. “Fine, we’ll go with yours.”

“Of course we will.”

“I’m going to help Zara with the tea.” As he came closer, I looked at him over my shoulder, a soft smile curving my lips. He smiled back and I felt my heart squeeze. We stood there gazing at each other and I forgot where I was for a moment, just allowing myself to get lost in his gorgeous green eyes.

“Actually, we don’t need tea, Zara. Gabe and I were just going.”

“We were?”

“We totally were. Come on.”

Thanking me for the cake and coffee and telling me they’d see themselves out, Lucy hustled Gabe out of the house. When they had gone, I turned and leaned against the corner of the counter, my blood singing as Matt stepped toward me. “Sooooo,” he said, running a finger gently down my cheek.

“Sooooo,” I replied, my eyes on his lips. Moving closer, he put one hand on the counter next to me, trapping me in the corner with his body as he moved his other hand into my hair. I slipped my arms around his waist and pressed myself against him. “Kiss me,” I said softly. He needed no further encouragement, claiming my lips with his in a soul-searing kiss. He wrapped his arms around me, pushing me back against the counter as the kiss turned hot and wet. I felt our tongues tangle and choked back a moan as heat bloomed inside me. The feel of his body against mine and his kiss had me flashing back to my dream, sending my system into overdrive. It was too much.

Perhaps sensing my tension, Matt broke the kiss, slowly raising his head to look at me.

“Matthew, I…”

He smiled.

“What is it?”

“No one calls me Matthew. Well, except my mom.”

“Oh shit, I’m sorry—”

“Don’t be. I like it.” He reached up and pushed my hair back from my face. “Just like I like you.”

His simple admission made me smile. “I like you, too.”

Running the pad of his thumb over my bottom lip, he said, “I like kissing you, too.”

“Mm, same.”

“It’s just…confusing.”

“That it is,” I said, dropping my forehead to his chest, sighing when I felt his hands stroking my back. Then he pulled away, stepping back.

“So what are we going to do about it?”

“I think I’m just going to bury my head in the sand for now, thanks.”

“Really? You sure?”

“Yeah. I’m too much of a hot mess to deal with this right now. I need some time to think about it…if that’s okay with you?” I finished a little uncertainly.

“All right. That’s probably a good idea.”

“Thank you. I’m sorry, it’s just that, I don’t do casual, you know, and I definitely can’t do more than that.”

“Zara. It’s okay. You don’t need to explain. Think it over and get back to me when you’re ready. And in the meantime…” Running the tip of his finger down my cheek, heat flickered in his eyes.
