“Just get a shandy or something, Jay.”

“A shandy?” he repeated, horrified. “You can’t make me drink shandy. I refuse.”

“Well, I refuse to get back in your car if you drink anything stronger. Just have a cola. Or is your masculinity too fragile to handle a soft drink?”

Jay scowled, fighting for a comeback. “There’s nothing fragile about my masculinity.”

She just raised an eyebrow. Which was fair. That had been aterriblecomeback.

“Maybe I just need some Dutch courage for later,” he tried instead, then instantly regretted it when Sophia’s face fell and she flushed, looking down to play with the damn pleats on her skirt.

“You know I won’t force you into anything you don’t want to do,” she said softly.

“I didn’t mean… Soph… Look, come on, stand up. We’re leaving.”

She looked up in surprise. “What? Why? We only just got here.”

“Because you don’t want to be here, and I don’t want shandy or cola or any damn drink at all. I just want to go home and kiss you.” He held out his hand. “Come on. Let’s do this thing, Clements.”

She got up and took his hand a little cautiously. Jay led them back to the car.

Chapter eight

Sophia

SophiatensedasJaypulled out of the car park, but he drove fairly normally for a change, seeming deep in thought.

Neither of them spoke. After a while Jay said, “Put some music on if you want. It’s Bluetooth.”

Sophia thought for a moment, smiling inwardly as she scrolled through the songs on her phone, wondering if she dared…

Yes. She did dare.

Jay looked at her in shock as the eighties metal song started to play. “Fuck, Clements. Danzig? Tell me you don’t like Danzig?”

“You were listening to Van Halen when you crashed. I wondered if perhaps we had the same taste in music.”

Jay seemed speechless for a moment. He kept turning to stare at her.

“You should really watch the road when driving, Jay.”

“But… But… How, Clements?”

She just shrugged, smiling. “I have many secrets.”

“Clearly!”

They listened to the song for a minute, Jay looking thunderstruck. Sophia watched him furtively, seeing various expressions cross his face at speed as he attempted to come to terms with this strange new reality.

“OK,” he said. “Mötley Crüe?”

“Yes.”

“Guns and Roses?”

“Yes.”

“Led Zeppelin?”
