She laughed slightly, and his voice came even lower and more huskily down the phone. “Brackets. Brackets. Brackets.”

He kept saying it, started groaning it, panting it, so it sounded like…likesexnoises.

“Brackets…oh, brackets, brackets, yes, brackets—”

She burst out laughing.

“Oh my god, Jay!”

He stopped and she could hear him chuckle, hear the smile still in his voice. “Did I make you laugh?”

“Yes!”

“Good. I thought you might be feeling nervous.”

“I am. A little. But not as much now. Thank you.”

“Any time. And Soph…?”

“Yes?”

“It’ll be good. I’ll make it lovely for you. I promise.”

She smiled, blushing. “I know.”

“OK. Good. Can you open the door then? I’m right outside.”

She hurried to the front door and flung it open. Jay was standing there grinning as he slipped his phone into his pocket.

“You’re forty minutes early!” she exclaimed.

“Punctuality was never my strong point.” He nodded over her shoulder to the stairs. “Lead the way, Clements. We’ve got work to do.”

Chapter eleven

Sophia

Sophiawalkedupthestairs, feeling a little shaky. A little hot.

They were really going to do this.

Jay Orton was going to touch her…there.

In her room, she closed the door firmly behind them, wishing it had a lock. She crossed to the window and shut the curtain. It was still daylight outside so the light was only dimmed, not gone.

Jay watched her.

“I put a dress on,” she said, standing in the middle of the room, clasping her hands and looking anywhere but at him. “I thought it would be easiest. And I’m not wearing any pants.”

Jay twitched slightly and let out a breath that sounded almost like a curse. He closed his eyes and tilted his head up as though praying. Or counting down from ten.

“What are you doing?” she said anxiously. “Was that the wrong thing to do? Or say?”

“Not at all.” He opened his eyes and smiled a little. “I’m just thanking the gods or the fates or the stars or whoever it was who seated us together at that dinner.”

“I suspect it was the Duke of Cumbria. Or, more probably, his aunt, my godmother.”

Jay smiled and stepped forward, taking her hands in his. “Fairy godmother, more like.”
