Jay smiled a little crookedly. “OK. I promise I won’t tell Simon that.”

She laughed again and sniffed back the last of her tears. And then, feeling brave, feeling like it was impossible for her not to, she touched Jay’s beautiful, teasing lips and then reached up to kiss them.

He kissed her back so gently that she almost started crying again. It was painful to feel this close, this happy, this cared for.

She leaned into him more, wanting to press herself against him, feel all that strong, lean body touching hers. She slid her fingers into his hair and down the side of his face, tracing his cheekbones, his jaw, her hands coming down to close around his muscled shoulders.

Jay broke away, sounding a little breathless, cupping her face in his hands and saying, his voice a little strained, “We can stop anytime, OK? Just say the word and we’ll stop.”

“I know, but I don’t want to stop…”

Jay held her gaze, and, somehow, she didn’t mind. Heat was gripping her body in waves, and she felt both giddy and powerful. She could see his desire, and it made her feel unlike herself, as though she was suddenly her own cheerleader rather than someone who stood on the sidelines and merely criticised.

Jay reached up and undid the first button of her dress. He watched her face the whole time as he worked his way slowly down the buttons. “OK?” he asked, as he undid the last one and reached up to push the dress from her shoulders.

Sophia nodded. “OK.”

Jay pushed her dress to the floor, and even though he had seen her before with no bra, with no pants, there was something about standing before him in her underwear, something so deliberate and grown-up about it, that she got a thrill just from the way his eyes tracked down her body, roaming over her in a way that was both strained and possessive.

And she knew she had a good body. It was strong and healthy and well-kept. Jay liked it. She might not have much experience, but she could tell that much.

“You are so beautiful,” he said, kissing her again.

The brush of his clothes against her skin was almost intoxicating, but she wanted more. She reached up under his jumper and ran her fingers over the ridged muscle of his abdomen, feeling the breath of pleasure he sucked in at her touch. He stepped back to pull his top off, and she took her turn at running her eyes over his body. He was beautiful too. Lean and taut, a couple of small freckles on his chest. She traced them with her fingers.

Jay reached for her, pulling her against him as he kissed her more deeply. Then his hands were working at her back and a second later her bra was off. Jay palmed her breasts with an appreciative groan, and she felt his touch all the way down to her toes. How did it feel sogood?

“I love your breasts,” he said, in between slightly breathless kisses. “And I’ve seen many breasts. But yours are my favourites.”

She smiled slightly, even as he kissed her, breaking away to say, “I bet you say that to all the girls.”

“Honestly? I don’t normally talk much at all when doing this, but…” he bent his head to her chest and kissed his way down, cupping her breast to his mouth and running his tongue over her nipple so that she gasped, arching back. “I like talking to you, Clements.”

He moved his tongue to her other breast. Sophia moaned, hands running over his back, through his hair, while he held her against him, one hand on her lower back.

And then her phone rang.

She heard the noise. It didn’t quite compute at first. It was just a noise, unimportant—but Jay’s tongue teasing her, Jay’s hand slipping into her pants… All those things were theworld.

But the phone kept ringing. And the small part of her brain that was still working insisted on pointing out that the only person who phoned her was her mother, and her mother was extremely persistent when it came to being answered.

“Jay…” Sophia managed to say. “Jay…my phone.”

“Hmm?” Jay said, kissing her, just as his finger found the wetness inside her pants. He groaned.

“My phone… Oh God, that feels so good…” she gasped. “But my phone… It’s ringing…”

Jay glanced up, meeting her eyes just as he pushed his finger inside her. She whimpered and he smiled slightly, somehow looking both dazed and wicked. Working her slowly with his finger, he reached out with his other hand for her bag, which was on the record player stand next to them and took out her phone.

His expression flickered when he saw the screen. Then he pulled out of her and passed her the phone.

It wasn’t her mother.

It was Simon.
