He hugs me as he chokes out, “It’s a long story, Sis. I promise I’ll tell you soon.”

“Where are we?” I whisper.

“Hmmph,” he replies, “After momma and daddy were alerted about the fire, they went to the bookstore. They found you passed out on a stretcher and that man of yours, Yiorgos wouldn’t let the EMT’s take you to a hospital. He told them he was your fiancé and once they determined you didn’t have any severe medical emergencies, Yiorgos brought you here.”

Confused, I ask him, “But where is here?”

“His home. Momma and Daddy are downstairs with him, Zoe, Basil and Malichi. Honestly, he and his people seem alright to me.”

I nod, knowing that was true but I couldn’t help asking again, “Tahir, where have you been?”

The bedroom door opens with Yiorgos and my parents coming in.

Momma rushes over, pushing Tahir out of the way, then hugs and kisses me.

“Baby, I was wondering when you were going wake up. You’ve been out since Yiorgos brought you here last night,” Momma cries, clutching me tighter.

Tears stream down my face as I say, “Don’t cry, Momma.”

“I’m just thankful that you’re okay.” She hugs me once more before releasing me.

“Me, too,” I tell her. “Where’s Zoe?” I notice she didn’t come in with them.

“She’s downstairs with Basil,” Yiorgos informs me, with a welcoming smile.

“Oh, okay.” I respond. “I’m sure she was just as surprised as I was to see Tahir. I’m still in shock that he’s actually here.”

Daddy folds his arms over his chest. “But why now? All this time he’s been gone and let’s be honest, we all thought he was dead at some point. It’s been five years and now he decides to reappear. What about the years your family has cried for you to come home, Tahir? Or the nights your momma woke up in a cold sweat, calling out your name?”

Tahir raises his chin in respect, but I can tell this is not the same Tahir that left us.

“I’m sorry, daddy. Truly, I am. I suffered right along with you all. Do you know how many times I picked up the phone to call and tell you that I was all right or wanting to jump in my car and come home but I couldn’t?” His voice shakes.

Seizing his hand, I ask, “Tahir, why couldn’t you do that?”

He glances at Yiorgos, then back at me. “I will explain everything but first, I need to have a conversation with your fiancé.”

“Speaking of fiancé,” Daddy says, cutting his eyes to me. “I’d like to know your side of how that happened seeing as your momma nor I have never heard anything about Yiorgos until last night.”

“I know I like to hear about it, considering this nice size rock on your finger,” Momma adds, raising my left hand that has a large diamond ring on it. How could I have missed that?

Peeking over to a smirking Yiorgos, I squint my eyes at him. We haven’t been together long enough to even think about getting engaged. Hell, we haven’t even had sex yet.
