“And your name is?”

“Yiorgos Kourakos,” I reply.

He writes it down then flips the notebook close. “Well, Mr. Kourakos we have been trying to get in touch with Ms. Lowe and she’s not picking up our calls. Should you speak to her, please let her know that we need to speak with her as soon as possible on what happened here today.”

Lena grasps the sleeve of my suit as the officer walks away. “I told them that someone tried to rob the bookstore. I grew up in the inner city, so I know how this shit goes. I already prepped Melonie on our story. Just get Dee and Zoe back. They’re the only family I have.”

“Keep to that story and I promise Deanna and Zoe will be back before the two of you are released from the hospital,” I tell her.

“Okay,” she says as they wheel her away.

Once the EMT’s had Lena and Melonie stabilized, I told them to send any charges for their services as well as the hospitals to Kourakos Enterprises. The police did a half ass job of dusting for fingerprints around the store, but let’s be honest, this is a business and how are you going to separate customers prints from the bad guys?

The officer who spoke to me earlier hands me his card. “Please, let Ms. Lowe know that it’s imperative that we speak to her.”

“Of course,” I lie. When Deanna’s able to speak to them, I’ll make sure she knows what to say.

As the last officer exits, Basil returns, holding his phone out to me. I take it, then put it up to my ear. “What?”

“We’re on our way. We’ll be there in a few hours,” Balthazar says from the other end.

Just like that my family was on their way to have my back. Deanna needs me and if it takes having to call upon everyone in my family, then that’s what the fuck I’m going to do.

Responding back to him, I declare, “Cousin, you better get here before I turn Chicago into a fucking wasteland.”

“Just hold on, cousin. I know you want to burn the city down, but just hold on.”

“Yeah, we’ll be at the house” I snarl, ending the call.

After ending the call with Balthazar, Basil and I stood around, trying to determine how to deal with this Dutch situation when the door swings open. Basil and I spin around, drawing our pistols.

Tahir stands there looking like a pissed off pit bull. We lower our weapons as he approaches us.

Glaring at Tahir, I ask, “How did you know to come here?”

“I got a text from Dee’s phone that said ‘Welcome home, Tahir. The streets been waiting on you.’ I thought Dee was playing around, but when I went to call her, it went straight to voice mail. That’s when I knew something wasn’t right and rushed over here. Where’s Dee and Zoe?”

Grabbing his shoulder, I tell him, “Dutch has them.”

Tahir’s face twists with anger as he jerks out of my grip. He starts to pace back and forth. “Are you fucking kidding me? Fuck!” he yells, walking in circles, slapping the sides of his head. “I should’ve stayed fucking gone. They would still be here. This shit is all my fucking fault.”

Stepping to Tahir, I state “Look, you can blame yourself all you want but at the end of the day whether you came home or not it was only a matter of time before Dutch was going to do something to fucking draw you out. That motherfucker is running scared because you’re the only one the prosecutors have to put a nail in his coffin. But guess what? Fuck the prosecutors and everyone else because we’re about to take his ass down and anyone else who’s standing with him. He’s taken my woman and my sister-in-law and for that he must die.”

Tahir stops, glaring at me. “I know where his people hang out. We can go get at them right now.”

“No, we need to do this right and not go in without a plan. I have reinforcements coming. Dutch is using Deanna and Zoe as bargaining chips to get to you. Right now, he’s trying to make you sweat, and we’ll let him think it’s working.”

“Man, Iamfucking sweating,” Tahir shouts with his fists clenched.

“Tahir, you said you know who my family is, right?”

He looks away.

“Then you should know that we would go through hell and high water for our own. Deanna and Zoe aremyfamily and I consider you as brother too. Trust me when I say heads are going to fucking roll for this act of disrespect,” I declare.

He finally nods.

“Now, let’s get the fuck out of here. My people will be here soon, and they are just as ruthless as I am,” I state before we leave the bookstore. Once I have it locked up, I was on a mission to save my woman. Not to exclude Zoe, because I don’t want to have deal with Basil or their parents. Dutch thought taking Deanna and Zoe would bring him the results he wanted, but I’m going to love to see his face when he sees how that plays out for him.
