Jaden giggles, saying, “Well, your momma was an impressive cook Mr. Morgan. Booker, what can I get you?”

“I’ll have half a slab of ribs, baked beans, potato salad, and a Coke.”

“Got you. And for you two gentlemen?”

Leaning over to Sydney I whisper, “What do you recommend?”

“Another restaurant,” she whispers back.

“In that case, let me have exactly what Sydney ordered,” I told Jaden.

Jaden scribbles on her pad, then looks at Batista.

“Give me the slab of ribs, half barbeque chicken, potato salad, baked beans, and an order of coleslaw,” he says, peering at Booker as he hands Jaden the menu.

That might’ve seemed like a lot of food, but trust me, Batista can put some food away. His tall, muscular frame was built like a Mack truck. I’m surprised he didn’t order more.

Once Jaden has our orders written down, I give her my menu.

“I’ll get your orders in now and Booker, I’ll be right back with your Coke,” she says before leaving again.

Once our food was ordered, Morgan asked “Why are you here in Shreveport, when your business is primarily in New Orleans?”

Chapter 5

Sydney

Sitting at the edgeof my seat, I wait to hear how Domencio will answer daddy’s question. If I had known his father and mine had prior dealings in the past, I would’ve been so far away from that Poker game last night. Since moving my family away from that life, I avoid daddy’s previous contacts. And when I do, it’s always the same. They want me to consider getting back into pushing drugs and I will never do that.

Six years ago, after I graduated from LSU with a business degree, daddy decided he was going to take a step back from the business and let me take over with Booker by my side. I honestly wasn’t surprised because I always knew one day, he would let the Princess have her reign.

I was shocked when daddy announced he wanted to go into semi-retirement so early. It wasn’t like he was old or anything like that, but he explained he wanted to slowly transition into his golden years and spend time helping momma at Ruby’s.

I had no problems assuming my position because daddy had been teaching me the ropes since I was a little girl. And when Booker came along, daddy did the same with him.

Before fully taking over, I sat with daddy and explained to him it was time for our family to get out of the dope game and leave that shit to the street boys. I wanted to take our business to another level. Since we already owned properties, it was time to expand. That would take the target off our backs by rival dope dealers and all profits we will make in the future would be one hundred percent legit.
