Ignoring the smile of victory on his face, I tell momma and daddy, “I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

As I was leaving Jaden brought my order. My mind was working overtime, wondering how I could avoid this meeting with Domencio. I’ve done wonderfully on my own and I know Shreveport like the back of my hands. I grew up here, he flew here, so I have the advantage over him.

Chapter 6

Domencio

Since the encounterwith Sydney and her family Sunday, I’ve waited three days to get in touch with her. I wanted to give her some time to cool off. I’ve never had a beautiful woman pull a gun on me, and I was taken aback by her boldness. Though I shouldn’t have been surprised after what she did to Smitty but thank God her parents were there otherwise she probably would’ve pulled the trigger on my ass.

I didn’t want to seem like a rat and reveal what happened at Blue Bayou, but Sydney left me no choice. Plus, in hindsight, I felt Mr. Morgan should have been privy to the details of that night. Yes, Sydney was now the head of their family, but she should have told Mr. Morgan. You never know when people affiliated with your enemies will pop up to take revenge. It’s best to let those closest to you in on what’s going on, so they will be prepared for any type of retaliation.

I called my daddy the next morning to fill him in on things. After giving him the run down at Blue Bayou, he warned me to watch out for the Cajuns. When Smitty doesn’t return home, his family will try and find out where he’s at and could potentially venture this way to look for him. If they find out he’s dead, they’re going to want vengeance.

Knowing I had plenty of men here to handle Smitty’s inbred family, I told daddy, “We’ll be ready for them.”

“Make sure you are son, because those swamp creatures don’t give a shit about modern day laws. They will slit the throats of their enemies in broad daylight and that goes for Sydney. They won’t think twice about her being a woman. If they find out she was a part of Smitty’s demise, they won’t hesitate to kill her.”

There’s no way I was going to let that happen. If Smitty’s family did show their faces; I would blow them the fuck off. Just like I protect those closest to me, Sydney has now earned her spot.

Before ending the call with daddy, he was happy to hear that Mr. Morgan had asked about him. Daddy said that he would reach out to Mr. Morgan so they could catch up.

Sitting in my office at Blue Bayou, I play with Sydney’s business card in my hand. It’s Wednesday, close to nine-thirty in the morning. I wonder if I call her now to meet for dinner later, would she agree to it? Knowing Sydney, she’ll probably give me every excuse under the sun, but I had backup for that.

Picking up my desk phone, I dial her number. On the third ring, she answers.

“Morgan Enterprises, Sydney speaking. How may I help you?”

“You can help me by having dinner with me tonight, so we can discuss business,” I return.

Silence greets me as I’ve caught her off guard.

“Hello” I say.

Sydney returns, “Mr. DeLuca...”

“Domencio,” I correct.
