“Yes, Domencio. Thank you for calling but I have a lot going on today. So, I’ll have to decline your dinner invitation.”

Excuse number one.

Trying again, I suggest, “I see, well maybe I can bring dinner to your office if you’re going to be working late.”

“That’s not a good idea because I won’t be at the office. I’ll be out scouting new properties.”

Excuse number two.

Smirking, I propose, “What about afterwards?”

With no hesitation, she replies, “Afterwards, I’ll be too tired to do anything else besides going home and preparing for tomorrow.”

Excuse number three.

“Alright then, Ms. Morgan. I see that you have a busy day ahead of you and I totally understand. When business is popping, you have to stay on it. Hopefully, we’ll be able to sit down soon,” I tell her.

“Of course. How about I check my schedule to see when I’m available, then get back with you,” she states.

“Sounds good to me,” I say, “Have a good day, Sydney.”

“You too, Domencio.”

Sydney might’ve thought she got rid of me easily, but I had other plans. I have men watching her office and when she leaves at the end of her day, they’re going to notify me. Thanks to my former IT guy, I already had access to Sydney’s schedule and her last appointment is at three this afternoon.

By three-thirty my men alerted me Sydney was leaving her office. I had a car on her to see where she went afterwards. She stopped at Wal-Mart and picked up some essentials, next she picked up clothes from the dry cleaners, then made a quick stop at one of her family’s detailing shops to have her car washed before heading home.

While Sydney was doing all of that, I called in an order to Bourbon Bistro at the casino. After picking it up, I drove to her house, parking two cars down. She didn’t know what my car looked like, so I had nothing to worry about.

Twenty minutes later, she pulls her pearl white G Wagon into the driveway. Once she parks, Sydney gets out wearing a cream colored business suit with a tan dress shirt underneath that has a large bow tied around her neck. She opens the back passenger door and grabs the bags before going inside her house.

I waste no time getting out. After taking out the food I ordered, I stroll up to her front door. I wonder how things may go when she sees me on the other side of her front door. One, she might ignore me and not open the door at all, or two, she could open the door and be nice enough to invite me in. I'm hoping for the latter.

Taking a deep breath, I press the doorbell. It’s loud enough for me to hear it from the outside. Staring at the camera mounted above me, I notice when it slightly turns my way.

“Mr. DeLuca, why are you here at my residence?” Sydney asks through the speaker.

Holding up the bags, I reply, “Because I haven’t had dinner, and I know you said earlier that your day was going to be busy, so I thought we could have dinner together.”

“Is that so?” she questions.

“Yes, ma’am,” I state. “This has nothing to do with business, just a friendly dinner. We don’t have to talk about any of that. I just thought it would be a good idea for us to break bread, one on one, not like at Blue Bayou or at your family’s restaurant. I want to get to know you better and I may be wrong, but I thought you felt the same way about me. If I am wrong, then I apologize.”

I look at the door, hoping I haven’t made a big mistake. Maybe I read too much into our interactions. Maybe Sydney didn’t share the same feelings as I do. Those negative thoughts are thrown out the window when the front door opens. Her suit jacket is gone, and her heels are now replaced with a comfy looking pair of fuzzy black house shoes.

Sydney moves to the side, and I notice the pistol in her free hand at her side. “Come in.”

Before testing the waters, I ask, “Are you sure? Is there a chance if I take one step inside, I’ll be gunned down.”

Sydney lowers her head as she snickers, “If that was the case, then your men would’ve been killed after they followed me to my home, and I waited to finish you off.”

Raising my eyebrow at her, Sydney says, “Don’t look surprised Mr. DeLuca. It’s the way of our world...Watch your enemies as they watch you.You might have my daddy fooled but I’m still on the fence with you.”

Letting my arms drop to my sides, I question, “Do you think I’m your enemy, Sydney?”

Sydney sucks her teeth. “I’m still trying to figure that out, but whatever enemy my family or I have, I will do whatever it takes to protect us.”

Nodding, I state, “As you should, which is one of the reasons why I am here. I’ve become aware that Smitty’s family is coming this way to find out where he is. I think that it’s imperative that the two of us are on the same page since we were the ones who filled his ass with bullets.”
