“I’ll let you discover them for yourself. I like the idea of you leaning on me when you need someone to be there for you.”

“Not fair, Lynch.”

“Not much is, Kendra.” He grinned. “But I do try.”

Yes, he did, she thought, more than any other man she had ever met. He’d walked with her through so many situations and always been with her at the end of the path. “But you still think I’m going to jettison you because you remind me of the part of my life I want to forget.”

“Good possibility.”

“But if I did that, it would mean I just paddle along and never change or grow at all.”

His eyes were suddenly narrowed on her face. “Where are we going with this, Kendra?”

“I believe that depends on both of us. You’re telling me how predictable I am, and I’m just going along for the ride.”

“Bad mistake?”

“You’ve made worse.” She was walking toward him. “But not lately. It’s true that I’ve been puzzling about our relationship and how to resolve it. But I’ve always known that it’s me who has to do it. Always my choice.”

She was close to him now and she could see his intensity, those piercing blue eyes, the way he always looked at her. “But I want to be more generous. I want to include you in the decision.”

He reached out and his forefinger gently touched the hollow of her throat. “Did I ever tell you how much I love the feel of this hollow? No, don’t move. I’m listening…”

“Then pay attention. You offered to take me away after this nightmare was over. You were rather insistent about it.”

“And you didn’t think it was a good idea.”

“I didn’t have time to think about it. I was too busy thinking about you. I’ll probably always be thinking about you unless you really do something weird and turn me off.”

“I promise I’ll do my best not to,” he said solemnly.

“Then here’s what I’m saying.” She reached up and kissed him on the lips. “I like you. I love sex with you. I even respect you. We don’t know where we’re going from here, but I refuse to be terrified every minute because you might not be around tomorrow. I really don’t want you to go out and get yourself killed, but if you do, I guess I could take it. I’m not going to be scared about what might be. If I get too upset, I’ll just go after you and make certain that it doesn’t happen.” She took a step back away from him. “Now I’m going to drive home and pack a bag and hope you haven’t changed your mind about that trip. I think we should go to Spain. I’ve heard it has beaches and atmosphere and wonderful music.”

“What about your clients?”

“If you’d asked me, instead of assuming you knew what I’d do, I’d have told you that I’ve already arranged to take a few weeks off from my therapy sessions. I spent the last few days interviewing a substitute.”

“You could have told me,” he said mildly.

“You were too busy making the final report on the Johannesburg situation to the Justice Department. Besides, you were evidently having such a good time analyzing my every action, maybe I thought you might object to my displaying a thought of my own.”

“Ouch.”

“Does that mean you won’t take me to Spain?”

“It means you don’t have a chance of escaping. I obviously have to revamp my entire way of thinking where you’re concerned. I believe Marbella, Spain, might be just the place to do the research.”

“Good.” She smiled at him. “Then take Metcalf home and I’ll see you back at the condo.” She looked back over her shoulder. “Oh, and if you get a call from Tricia, don’t take it until I can talk to you.”

“Don’t worry, we’re not taking her to Spain,” he said as he got back into his car. “She talked me into the Olympics, but enough is enough.”

Oh, shit. Too late, Kendra realized. Tricia had already gotten to Lynch, and it seemed they were all going to be best buds at the Olympics. Well, why not? Tricia could be fun, and she might need someone to watch over her.

“Something wrong?” Lynch was looking at her face.

“No, nothing is wrong.” She smiled at him. The Olympics seemed a long time away right now. In the meantime, they had Spain, and she had Lynch, and who knew what other adventures might pop up? “Hurry. I can’t wait!”
