Page 16 of Kane’s Truth

But it was neither a grumpy old man nor a police officer that was approaching. Kane looked up and couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing. Or more accurately, whohe was seeing.

It was Mitch.

And judging by the look on his face, Mitch looked like he had a lot to say to Kane. But whether it was good or bad, Kane couldn’t tell.

‘Boy, up on your feet,’ Mitch said. ‘And that’s an order from your Daddy.’

Kane wasted no time.

Kane was up on his feet like a flash. The one thing he didn’t know was what Mitch was going to do next…

Chapter 10

Mitch had jumped several red lights on the way to Kane. Mitch figured he would take that up with the sheriff’s department later, what was most important to him was finding Kane as quickly as he possibly could.

In that moment, nothing else mattered.

It wasn’t evenclose.

Mitch knew he had to find his Little above all else. He was a man on a mission, and nothing was going to stop him.

As he weaved in and out of cars travelling at the far more sedate speed usually expected in Cape Daddy, Mitch realized that he hadn’t even put his safety belt on. Even for a sensible Daddy like Mitch, rules and regulations were totally out of the window.

So many possibilities were running through Mitch’s head.

It seemed to him that Kane must have suffered some kind of shock or nasty surprise. Nothing else made any sense to him. That he would go from being so happy to suddenly breaking off the relationship and claiming to be leaving town? There justhadto be a reason behind it.

Mitch arrived at the location given to him by Taylor and immediately recognized it was the street where he had first met Kane.

Huh. This is… strange.

Why the hell is the boy here?

There’s only one way I’ll find out…

Mitch parked his truck and jumped out. He cast his gaze around but couldn’t immediately see Kane. Mitch was worried that Kane might have carried on his journey. In fact, he could in theory by miles away by now, especially if he had gone to the bus depot.

But first things first, Mitch had to scout the area. If this is where Taylor saw him, there was still every chance that he was in the vicinity.

Mitch walked down the road and scanned for any trace of Kane. It was entirely possible that he had ditched his cycle, or maybe even dropped something. Anything Mitch could cling on to as some kind of a clue could prove invaluable.

But as Mitch continued to walk down the perfectly suburban street, he suddenly realized that he wouldn’t need to look too much further.

It was Kane.

Mitch’s heart began to thump and thud inside his powerful chest. The sight of Kane, curled up on the floor with a look ofanguish on his face was more than enough to set his Daddy instincts off.

Mitch wanted to rush over and pick him up. He wanted to snuggle him and make sure that he was okay. Mitch cared deeply about Kane in a way that he had never experienced before.

And that waspreciselywhy he knew he had to show some restraint. If something had happened, a traumatic incident perhaps, the last thing Kane needed was to be overburdened with emotion or a sudden shock.

I have to tread carefully.

No anger. No punishment.

The boy needs a gentle hand now…

Kane needed a balanced and even-handed approach right now. So, despite wanting to charge over and immediately embrace his loved one, Mitch promised himself he would show restraint. No matter how hard that was.
