Page 15 of Kane’s Truth

Kane peeked out from behind the stationary SUV. He was in a nice neighborhood. The picket fences and immaculately mowed lawns looked splendid.

In the distance, Kane could hear children playing in their gardens and having a whole heap of fun. The giggles and laughter seemed to be travelling through the air and making a beeline toward Kane.

Usually, the sound of laughter and fun was like music to Kane’s ears. But not today. Not this time. In that precise moment, all the sound of laughter did was remind Kane just how sad and upset he felt.

All the progress Kane had made with his novel. And his relationship with Mitch.Everythinghad crashed down in amost devastating way. It wasn’t meant to be like this. Kane thought about his school days.

Playing the class clown had effectively absolved him of ever having to take anything seriously or set himself goals. Kane had cruised through high school thinking that his sole purpose was to play practical jokes and make people laugh.

It was fun while it lasted, but high school was long over, and Kane was realizing that this was his life now. There was no recess or long summer holidays, this was the real world. And in the real world, being known as the class clown wasn’t exactly an advantage.

This was the truth that Kane had lived with for so long. It was painful to think about, but he saw it clearer than ever before.

And now the moment Kane finally managed to start shedding that image of being the class clown, the rug had been pulled from beneath him with brutal force.

Maybe I should stick to what I’m good at.

Jokers don’t get to have careers. Or Daddies either.

Sob!

If matters weren’t already bad enough, Kane suddenly realized something else. The neighborhood that he found himself in was more familiar than he first comprehended.

Kane was in fact back in the very street where he took what he genuinely thought was Cody’s bicycle. In other words, Kane was back at the scene of the crime.Literally.

As he looked around, Kane remembered all the landmarks. The stop signs at the end of the road. The bright pink sportscar in the driveway on the house across the street. Even the over-enthusiastic miniature terrier barking as he bounced up and down in the third house on the left. It was all bringing back bad memories.

Kane was overcome with fear.

What if the horrible man came out of his house and spotted him on the street? With an attempted robbery charge already hanging over him, the last thing Kane wanted was some kind of extra charge on top of that.

That old butthead will call the cops.

He’ll think I’m a stalker or some kind if weirdo.

Then I’ll be in even more trouble…

‘I’m a stupid, silly idiot!’ Kane exclaimed, kicking and stomping his feet on the ground out of sheer frustration. ‘I did the right thing leaving. A smart Daddy like Mitch would never want me, not really. It was only a matter of time before he ran out of patience with me anyway!’

Kane found the tears impossible to stop. As they flowed down his cheeks, not even the comfort of Coco was doing any noticeable good for his spirits.

The more Kane thought of Mitch, the more upset he got. Kane couldn’t believe how bad he had screwed things up. Mitch would never take him back now, not after running away like that at the first sign of trouble.

Kane had used his fun loving and mischievous side as a defense mechanism since high school. But Kane had enjoyed the structure and focus that being Mitch’s Little hadgiven him.

Working on his novel had made Kane feel happier and more secure in himself that he had ever experienced before. He had still been having fun, except now it was with a concrete end goal – one that he had become increasingly confident of achieving too.

But now it felt like all the work had been for nothing.

And that feelingsucked.

However just as Kane thought things couldn’t get any worse, he sensed someone approaching in the distance. Kane couldn’t bear to look up and see who it was.

What if it was the horrible man who accused him of stealing?

Or a police officer?

Kane couldn’t handle any more lectures or nasty accusations being flung in his direction. He had experienced enough upset and drama to last his a lifetime and wanted nothing more than to just be left alone from here on in.
