Dipping my left wing, I make a slow circle above them before touching down. I remain in my four-legged form, ready to breathe flame upon them if this is some sort of trap.

Deep down, I doubt Varys would try to harm me in any way, but one can never be too sure. Especially when dealing with the Elves and the Fae.

Folding my wings tight to my back, I lower my head, studying the female beside Varys, shocked when I notice the rounded shells of her ears. She is human then, and not High Elf.

My nostrils flare and my head jerks back slightly in surprise when I realize they each carry each other’s scent. Seven hells! “A human?” My gaze snaps to Varys in disbelief. “Since when does your kind mate with them?”

“Queen Inara is my bondmate.” He growls, baring his fangs. “You will show your respect.”

In a whirl of wind and debris, I transform into my two-legged form, conjuring a pair of black pants to cover my lower half, and cautiously move toward them.

Everyone knows Dark Elves are just as protective of their mates as Dragons, and I watch King Varys warily as I approach.

CHAPTER41

AURDYN

Varys’s human queen is dressed in a long, silken blue dress that highlights the strange color of her eyes—a combination of light brown and green. Her long blonde hair hangs down her back and over her shoulders, in sharp contrast to the black and white hair of the Dark Elves all around her.

I notice the guards behind her and Varys slowly beginning to form a tight formation at their backs, no doubt readying to defend them both if necessary.

With great difficulty, I manage to not roll my eyes. Do they not realize that if I’d wanted to harm Varys or his Queen, I could have easily done so from the air in my full Dragon form?

Varys stands beside her, his feet spread slightly apart in a defensive stance and his lethal, black claws extended, readying to protect her. His pointed ears stick up from his short, black hair and his glowing blue eyes scan me from head to toe.

“I called you here to speak of the Wraiths,” Varys says. “They have found a way to cross the Great Wall.”

A thin curl of smoke puffs out from my nostrils as I clench my jaw. “The Mages have finally made their move.”

“What do you mean?” Varys asks.

“They have always hungered for power. Now, they have found a way to acquire it.”

“How?” Queen Inara asks.

My gaze snaps to hers, narrowing as I think on the army I just saw on its way to Florin with a Mage and the Wraiths. “You should know, human. It is your kind who have helped them.” She frowns, appearing confused by my words before I turn my attention back to Varys. “Prince Aegryn is marching even now across the land with an army of Wraiths toward the kingdom of Florin.”

“How do you know this?” Queen Inara asks.

“I have seen it,” I grind out.

“How are the Wraiths being controlled?” Varys asks. “I thought it was impossible for anyone to do this.”

I narrow my eyes as I think on the treachery of the Mages. “The Mages have found a way to enslave them with magic. There are reports that a few have escaped. Those are the ones now wandering across the lands unchecked.”

“But why would the Mages do this?” Queen Inara asks. “Theyknowhow dangerous the Wraiths are.”

“Why does anyone want power?” I reply darkly. “All I know is that they are controlling the Wraiths, and they have allied themselves with Prince Aegryn of Kolstrad to march upon Florin.”

“If this is true, we must stand against them,” Varys says.

We?Since when do my people or I answer to his. “I will not drag my kind into a war they need not fight,” I state firmly. “Kolstrad and Florin are both human kingdoms. Long ago, they aligned themselves with the Order of Mages to protect them from otherworldly beings, such as ourselves. If the Mages have now decided to turn their human pets against each other, that is their problem, not ours.”

Queen Inara levels an icy glare as she steps toward me. “Do you truly believe that Prince Aegryn and the Mages will not come for your people too? What will stop them from attacking you after they finish with the rest of us, Dragon King?”

I doubt this would happen. We are safe in our mountains. It is why we chose to make our homes there. “That time may not even come.”

“It will, if they are successful,” she counters.
