I’m surprised by her boldness as she stands before me, appearing unafraid.

Perhaps it is only human males that are weak, for the females I’ve met seem to be possessed of as much fire as any female Dragon.

I turn to Varys. “I have no quarrel with the Dark Elves. I came to this meeting to share what I know. That is all.”

CHAPTER42

AURDYN

“If my brother’s kingdom falls, yours could be next.” Queen Inara’s eyes flash with anger.

Brother? If she is speaking of King Edmynd, then that means she is—

My thoughts are interrupted as she continues. “How can you not see this?”

“I doubt that would happen,” I huff. “My people are strong. Humans are weak.”

“And I heard Dragons were brave,” she counters. “But it seems I was wrong. You are a coward who would hide in his mountain while the rest of the world burns around him.”

One of Varys’s guards sucks in a sharp breath, as shocked as I am that she would speak to me in this way.

Anger flares bright in my chest and my nostrils flare. “Youdareto insult me?”

“If I am wrong, then I will gladly apologize. But I suspect that I am not.”

A deep growl rises in my throat as Varys’s guards look on, stunned by the boldness of their queen. Puffing out my chest, I step closer to her, glaring as her gaze locks with mine.

Instead of stepping back, she stands her ground like a true warrior, fierce and unafraid, reminding me of Freyja.

Varys pulls her behind him, baring his fangs in a feral snarl. “Do not threaten my queen, for it will be the last thing you do.”

Howdarehe challenge me? My muscles ripple beneath my scales, readying to shift in my Dragon form as a rumbling growl builds in my chest. A flash of light catches my eye, over his shoulder, and I halt abruptly, staring in shock at his human mate.

Power arcs between her fingers, crackling like lightning across her skin. She is like my T’kara. “You have magic.” I gape at her in disbelief. “How is this possible? I thought there was only one.”

“Only one what?” she asks.

“One human who possessed magic. Princess Freyja,” I explain. “I saved her from the Mages. Her uncle—the king—would have let them burn her for witchcraft because of her power. Before her, I did not know humans possessed such a thing.”

Inara stills, her magic dissipating immediately as she lowers her hands.

“You know her.” It is not a question; I can see it in her eyes.

“Our mothers were cousins. We used to play together when we were children. Tell me,” she demands. “Where is she now?”

“In my kingdom, where she is safe.”

Her brow creases into a small frown. “You speak of humans as if we were nothing, Dragon King, but you saved my cousin. Why?”

Her boldness is both irritating and at the same time admirable. She is as strong as my T’kara. “My reasons are my own.”

“And I should simply take your word that she is safe with you?” Inara challenges.

“Yes,” I state firmly, my patience for her doubt wearing thin. “She is under my protection. I will allow no one to harm her ever again.”

Varys studies me with a piercing gaze. “You protecther, but you would let her kind fall to the Wraiths while you hide in your mountains?”

“Her kind would have killed her if not for me,” I growl. “They do not deserve our protection.”
