The thought of it left a painful ache deep in my heart. But then again, the idea of going back to New York wasn’t something I ever planned.

“I’d have to deal with the bullshit again.”

“You deal with it just fine here. The only difference there is that they aren’t tourists and don’t think you’re an employee of the hotel.”

“You up for a move to New York?”

Stevie cocked her head to the side and studied me. “I guess you made the decision?”

“Looks that way.”

“Then all you have to do is tell him. But I suggest you make him work for it a little longer. Things come to him too easily.”

I shook my head. “You’re as incorrigible as he is.”

She shrugged.

At that moment, a ring sounded on the elevator, making both Stevie and me jump up. No one should be able to access it.

We had it on lockdown. Even Simon would have to call up to get inside.

That’s when I felt the tip of a gun pressed to the back of my head, and the sounds of some type of fight behind me.

“Don’t move, Nyx,” Justin, one of Simon’s men, ordered, grabbing me by my upper arm. “Tell your girl to stop struggling or she’ll end up like the rest of her people.”

I swallowed, trying to push away the fear prickling down my spine, and glanced at Stevie, who was in a headlock and pinned to the ground.

“Stevie,” I whispered. “Please. Remember the number-one rule you told me.”

Hearing the plea in my voice, she followed my request.

The rule she taught me was to do everything to stay alive, including let my assailant believe I’d yielded.

I had no doubt she’d keep looking for opportunities to get out of this situation. I had to keep this guy talking, keep them distracted. That was the only way to figure this out.

Right before Simon had left for his meeting, he’d handed me one of my blades and ordered me to strap it to my thigh. I’d thought he’d gone a little overboard with the around-the-clock double security team, the necklace, and the blade.

Now, I owed him the blowjob of his life.

If this was happening here, what could have happened at the meeting?

I closed my eyes for a brief second and prayed Simon stayed safe.

“Who ordered this?” I asked, trying to keep Justin’s attention on me.

A smug grin touched his mouth. “Mr. Drakos.”

Bullshit.

“Liar. Simon wouldn’t do this.”

“Wrong Drakos.”

That was when from the corner of my eye, I noticed Tony sprawled on the ground, blood dripping from the side of his head.

All my intentions of staying poised vanished as my stomach clenched, and without realizing it, I elbowed him in the ribs. “You bastard.”

“Calm the fuck down.” He pinned my arms behind my back. “He’s not dead. We don’t have time to clean the mess.”
