“I became exactly what your grandfather warned you against, and now you’re running scared.”

She moved to the door, turning the handle. Just as she opened the door to step through, she paused and glanced at me.

“I was going to leave Vegas for you. That’s how much I love you. Asshole that you are, and all. Too bad I was so wrong about you.”

With those words, Nyx shut the door and took the last decent part of my soul with her.

I had to remind myself this was the right thing to do.

She deserved better than me. A life without people using her to get to me. A life without her having to sacrifice her choices.

She could escape this world.

Bracing my hands on the back of a nearby sofa and dropping my head, I clenched my eyes tight.

“Fuck.”

Not even ten minutes later, my phone rang, and without thinking, I pulled it out of my pocket and answered, “Drakos.”

“The port is yours. The paperwork will arrive at your office in the morning.”

“How the fuck do you know anything happened?”

Could she have had time to reach her brothers?

“Nyx called saying she is coming into town and wants to practice with her blades. That’s my sign she’s upset and needs to let off steam.”

“I didn’t do it for the port.”

“I know. As I told you in our meeting, if she comes back to you, then she’s yours.”

“There is no chance of that ever happening. I made sure of it.”

The pain I’d caused her would remain etched in my heart for the rest of my life. Mykos was right—she deserved a life away from me, away from the shit of our world. Now she’d get her chance.

“She really does mean that much to you, doesn’t she?”

“It’s done. That’s all you need to know.”

“You’re a better man than I expected.”

“None of us are good men. We do what’s most advantageous for the long game.”

“Long game, is it?”

“Yes.”

“I see.” He remained quiet for a second and then said, “Well, consider the Mykoses among your allies to back you in future endeavors. All past grievances are null and void.”

Tyler hung up.

I sat down on a high-back chair, trying to process what had just transpired.

I’d finally done what generations of Drakoses and Mykoses could never accomplish. I had ended a century-old rivalry, one that had cost millions of dollars and countless lives. And all I’d had to do was destroy the best thing that had ever happened to me.
