“I know.”

“How?”

“I know everything about you.”

“Why?”

I was quiet for a few seconds, then confessed, “To make sure you’re safe.”

“I see.”

“What do you see?”

“That you’re a fucking liar.”

“What am I lying about?”

“Look me in the eyes and tell me it didn’t become real.”

“Does it matter?” I ran a frustrated hand through my hair. “I gave you what you want.”

“What is it you think I want?”

“Your freedom.”

“Am I really free? My heart doesn’t feel that way. Besides, you were right. I can’t leave this world being who I am and what I do.”

“There is no more marriage contract. You’re free,” I repeated. “Now we just wait out the formal period.”

“Do you love me, Simon?”

More than anything on Earth.

Instead of saying the words in my head, I said, “Don’t ask me that.”

“Why? Will it make you feel better if you keep telling yourself it was just sex?”

I clenched my fists at my sides, resisting the urge to turn and pull her to me. “You know it was more. I fucking told you things I never told anyone else.”

“Then answer the question. Do you love me?”

“Isn’t there a saying, if you love someone, set them free? I won’t hold you to a life you don’t want.”

“Are you saying you love me? Well, I have a question for you.”

I waited.

“Aren’t you worth loving?”

“Goddess.” I gripped the iron bars, dropping my head.

“You love me enough to let me go. Isn’t my love for you enough to stay?”

“I won’t trap you. You told me not to trap you.”

“I grew up in this world. I’m pretty good at handling it. Not sure if you know this, but I’m so good at navigating things, society calls me the Mykos Hellion.”

“And what about your life in Vegas? Are you ready to give that up?”
