A lump formed in my throat. No matter how hard I tried to push thoughts of him away, they lingered in the back of my mind. Maybe one day, he’d forgive me for what I’d done to us.

“Don’t let your weakness for your mother cloud the way the world works.”Joshi’s raised voice returned my attention to the continued exchange between father and son. “Your brother understood his duty. You will do yours.”

Neil came to stand beside me, drawing a glare from Joshi.

“Luke is dead. His duty, as you put it, made him stupid and cost him his life. I am far from stupid. And I know my duty, and it’s to my mother and sister, not to you.”

“You are weak. I should never have claimed you. You are no son of mine.”

“Too bad. I’m all you have left. Luke isn’t here to carry on your legacy. And you’ll never pass anything on to the daughter I kept you from forcing my mother to abort.”

A rage like nothing I’d ever felt radiated out from Neil. His breathing remained calm. However, the microscopic flex of his fingers gave away his readiness to reach for the weapon he kept holstered at his side.

The next words from his father would mean life or death. I couldn’t let him take the fall for this.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I scanned the room. Six people.

They all looked as if they were ready to run but were too afraid to make a move.

Option one, kill everyone, call the cleanup crew, and make everything disappear.

Definitely not the best idea and not the way I worked.

Option two, kill Joshi, extract and relocate the kitchen staff, clean up the scene, and pretend ignorance.

Promising, but it would require a logistical nightmare.

Option three, let the bastard live and wing it.

I hated this part of my job.

I’d protect Neil, no matter the cost. But my gut said everyone in this room wished for Joshi’s death. Which meant that option two was probably the best bet.

Only a few seconds had passed since Neil had made his statement, and I prayed I wouldn’t have to act. I’d rather have Joshi’s blood on my hands than on Neil’s. He shouldn’t carry the weight of killing his father.

“Why would I want a child she conceived by whoring herself to get a dime of my money?”

No such luck.

Before Neil could move, I kicked Joshi’s feet out from under him, dropping him onto his back. Pivoting, I pressed the heel of my foot against his windpipe as I drew the gun I had tucked into the back of my pants and pointed it against his head.

The utter shock and horror and Joshi’s face gave me a cold satisfaction.

Fucker still kept underestimating me.

“Give me the go-ahead, and I’ll do it for you. You don’t need this on your hands.”I stared straight into Joshi’s eyes, understanding finally dawning that I had no problems pulling the trigger.

“No, I want him to live. I’ve activated phase two of our plan. And then when we finish this, I want him to see me give everything he has to the daughter he hates so damn much.”

“I control this company,”Joshi croaked out. “You can’t force me to do anything.”

Phase two. About fucking time.

Neil had called in our interrogation team. It also meant he wanted his scary side to come out to play.

“This is where you are wrong. Neil and I have skills beyond anything you could ever imagine. Something more on the spectrum of deadly.”To prevent Joshi from speaking, I increased the pressure on his throat, causing a slight wheeze from him, and then continued.“I’m no longer the Queen of Diamonds, and he’s not the Joshi prince. And honestly, playing those roles was getting exhausting.”
